I have a friend who is currently obtaining a civil divorce from her husband. She may be interested in becoming a Catholic and I need to be able to know if she will need an annulment or not. Her husband was married twice before her and divorced both of his wives. While my friend and her husband were living together before marriage they became engaged. Shortly after becoming engaged they found out they were to have a baby and decided to get married right away. They had been married a little over five years and now are getting a divorce. I believe she may have been baptized as a Southern Baptist. I believe her husband was a non-believer. They have not been active in any church their entire time together. I do not know if they were married in a civil union or church.

I read somewhere on the internet yesterday that possibly the Church would not consider her marriage a marriage at all because he had been married twice before and that she would basically be considered an adulterous and therefore would not have to go through the annulment process. Is this true?

Divorce is not an impediment to becoming a Catholic. Divorce is only an impediment to a potential future marriage. She is free to become a Catholic but if at some point in the future she wanted to get married she would need an annulment for her previous marriage.
