Can a non-confirmed revert to the faith receive Communion?

I have a friend who was baptized Catholic and received his first Communion, but is now 20-something, has not been confirmed yet, and has not been practicing his faith. He has started going to Mass again and is interested in going to RCIA classes to be confirmed. Is it okay for him to receive Communion at this time?
