MrS:
I like Pat Madrid’s idea:

Suppose a verse in the bible said:

“I did not say that you stole the money.”
Most would come to the same interpretation of this simple sentence.

But using the bold font to place emphasis on one word, we see"

I did not say that you stole the money”
(perhaps someone else did)

“I did not say that you stole the money”
(an strong denial)

“I did not say that you stole the money”
( perhaps I wrote it or just made a gesture of indication)

“I did not say that you stole the money”
(I might have said he or she stole it, but not you)

“I did not say that you stole the money”
(I really said you borrowed it, moved it, etc)

“I did not say that you stole the money
(I said you stole the boat, or food, or etc)

If we are left without an authoritive, consistent voice to interpret for us, we could not agree on what this sentence, simple as it is, really should be telling us.

So we go back and ask directly of the person who first said or wrote it. Let’s do that with the scriptures. Oh, we can’t… that person is long dead.

Well, let’s ask someone who knew him well… they should be able to help… nope they are dead too…

And so on…

Thankfully the Catholic Church has the only reliable means of knowing what a verse is telling us… the Apostles, the Early Fathers, the Saints, The Church Doctors…

We need to listen to them more than the burning in the boosom.
The Key to understand the bible is common sense… However, though common as it sounds, most people don’t use common sense when reading the bible… What do you do when you read a book? Do you ask the question, Who, When, Where, What, Why? Are you aware that the bible is historically accurate… You have to also check the events of history regarding a period in the bible since every book in the bible was written at different periods with different events.

Actually, that would be restitution, and is required in order to be forgiven (unless you are unable to pay it back).

The penance that is given is actually a work of faith imposed “in atonement for the temporal punishment that remains after the guilt of sin and its eternal punishment have been forgiven” (Ott, p.434).

“The penance is directed at expiation and amendment.” (Ott, p.435)

It helps weaken our evil inclinations.

So here’s a question I have: When and where do the teachers of the Catholic church teach this stuff.
In the documents of councils and popes. In the writings of the early church fathers. In the writings and lives of saints.
40.png
Doreen:
Did I hear it in CCD and just not get it?
Maybe, maybe not. Some CCD programs do not teach what they are scheduled to teach, others run out of time. In general, it is the duty of the parents to instruct the children, not the Church. And many parents neglect that for various reasons.
40.png
Doreen:
How is it that the people of the church didn’t make this a serious priority in the teaching? Help me understand how I missed it.
Some neglected it, taking it for granted. Others deliberately pitched it out, thinking Vatican 2 made it irrelevant. But this has been a recurring problem over the centuries.

You may as well be one of the children of Adam and Eve asking how you missed out on the Garden of Paradise. :o

It wasn’t necessarily your fault, but you had to suffer anyway. Still, the right thing to do is see God’s good Will in it all, and be grateful for what He has deemed it good to do. I think many Catholics here went through the same thing you did. I sure did. We now see how important it is to love and serve God as our highest priority, how valuable His Church is for our spiritual well-being, and how terrible are apathy and error and neglect.

Meanwhile, find access to those precious teachings that you missed out on, something at your level of comprehension. Perhaps this forum will provide the best starting point until you find some good books. I have recommendations, but it depends on what you are ready for.

Dear MrS

The person might be long dead, however, what he taught did not end with him when God took him from earth. There a plenty of desciples who witnessed what the person taught and were taught to carry it through and pass it on… That is why, Jesus told us in Mt 24:35-HEAVEN AND EARTH SHALL PASS AWAY, BUT MY WORDS SHALL NOT PASS AWAY.

If someone says something other than what Jesus taught, he holds not what Jesus is teaching

Nicene:
No doubt, the apostles spoke of such as these:

2 Pet 3:15: And count the forbearance of our Lord as salvation. So also our beloved brother Paul wrote to you according to the wisdom given him,16: speaking of this as he does in all his letters. There are some things in them hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other scriptures.
17: You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, beware lest you be carried away with the error of lawless men and lose your own stability.
18: But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

1 John 2:19: They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out, that it might be plain that they all are not of us.
20: But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all know.

Only those annointed by the Holy One know Him, and count on the Lord for salvation, not the doctrines of men who went out from us.

Peace and God Bless
Nicene
The bottom line here is who were really the original and who went out?
Can you know the difference? those who taught doctrines that are clearly what Jesus and the apostles taught and try to defend it with vain philosophies. “those were who went out from us”

is penance the same as repentance?
Penance includes repentence.

Penance as a virtue is the
  1. deploring of past sins
  2. with the will to amend one’s behavior to please God.
Penance as a sacrament consists of the human acts of
  1. contrition (will to atone),
  2. confession (submission to judgement of God in person of the priest), and
  3. satisfaction (actual act of atonement given by the priest).
Contrition is the exercise of the virtue of penance, whereas acts of satisfaction are the fruit of penance.

Matthew 3:8 Bring forth therefore fruit worthy of penance.

Repentance can be of different kinds. One can repent in order to be baptised and obtain new life in Christ. One can repent after baptism for having fallen away from the faith, but baptism cannot be repeated, so this requires the power Christ gave to the Apostles to loosen sins. One can repent for having committed minor faults and make up for it by acts of charity without recourse to a priest.

Well, since I don’t want to look like a bad guy, here’s what Jesus Christ told me about the section of John’s Gospel previously referenced: Jesus offers his blood and body to us under the appearance of bread and wine, and that consuming his blood and body are one means by which Jesus offers his grace to us who faithfully follow his commandments.
Alright, I wasn’t going to do any posting tonight, 'cause I’m learning what a danger it is to my sleep banking. But as I was just reviewing some of the dialogue on this thread, I just HAD to ask this question…

MLChance…you still out there? Here’s a question for you …and I don’t want to pick up where you and 1Christ1Church left off…that is, PEACE Brother! 😉

You state that “consuming his blood and body are one means by which Jesus offers his grace to us who faithfully follow his commandments.”

So, there are actually two things I need to understand here:
  1. When you say “one means” does that imply that there are other means by which He offers His grace?
  2. This grace, according to your statement, is for those who “faithfully follow His commandments.” So, which comes first? The grace? Or the “following?”
Thanks, ML.

Wouldn’t I have learned it if I was witnessing it lived out before my very eyes by all those in fellowship with me? Why is there such a repression of JOY in the church? Why isn’t there a place for folks to share what God is actually doing for them? He’s a LIVING God, why don’t we talk about what He’s doing then?

I know that God is to be feared and revered, and honored, and bowed to, but He also talks of our joy being made complete! He continually makes that promise, if we’d just live for Him. And David sings of His praises in the Psalms, and there’s clearly transformation of lives happening in the early church documented in the New Testament. Lives were being changed daily! People were being healed daily! Folks were changed from murderers to disciples for crying out loud --and they were all talking about it!

When I think of my actual experience in the Catholic church, it is all hushed tones…don’t talk, don’t express anything outside of the ceremonial rites… and folks, I don’t mean to “bash”…really! I am just wondering why you don’t wonder these things, too?

People who heard of the works of Christ, in the Gospels, they RAN to Him so they could just touch His garments. There were exciting things going on, and they were fellowshiping, praising God and praying together in their free time, for goodness sake, and enjoying it!

I’m sorry…I’ll relax for a moment, and I pray you’ll receive these thoughts without feeling attacked. I don’t mean to criticize. I will share a few more things in the next post that might help you see what I’m talking about.

Sigh…

Every Tuesday evening, my husband and I get a sitter, and we go to the home of some friends. Five other couples join us, and we select (each 8-10 weeks or so) a book of the Bible, or a Christian text to study. We share what we are learning, and we ask questions, and we debate things like we’re doing here. We share how God is working in our lives. We share our prayer requests and concerns, and our praises, and then we pray together. And finally we have dessert.

It’s a beautiful thing. I look forward to it every week. We’re learning from each other. We’re doing the things that we’re commanded …to fellowship together, in prayer…not because we have to but because we want to! It’s refreshing!

Our church offers numerous studies that are available today to teach about things like “How to be Godly with Our Finances.” “Building a Marriage That Lasts” or “Bringing Them (your kids) Up in the Way They Should Go.” Things that concern us today are being discussed and studied in relation to the Scriptures. And on Sunday, you can attend the service and then an adult Bible fellowship class like these. (Or flip flop and do the ABF first then service.)

On Wednesdays, I go to my church for women’s studies. There’s childcare provided, and right now, I’m learning all about the Patriarchs through an incredibly inspired, young woman named Beth Moore (folks, watch one of her videos and about average Joe’s would be SO OVER!) It’s amazing and inspiring and edifying. She takes stories about guys like Jacob and Esau and brings them to life for us…helps us imagine really what it would have been like for them…what life was like then, all the details, so that we can relate so well to the way God was working in the OT. It’s been absolutely enlightening!

I don’t think I’d be getting all this in my local Catholic church. Sure donuts and conversation after the 9:30, but…okay, sorry. That’s not fair. Since I don’t know, maybe things have changed in the last 8 years. You, probably, I hope, are having Bible studies…some of you. Right? Lord, I hope so.

Okay, I really meant to go right to bed. This website has been really taxing my sleep time.

Thanks for letting me express myself here. I sure hope I am not offending anyone with these posts tonight. I truly am exhausted, and hurrying, and I might not be examining how I’m sounding to you…so forgive me in advance, friends. Please! :gopray2:

1 Timothy 5:23
“Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.”

Maybe average joe, really dont know how to interpret the bible…
Look at the verse properly, read it again correctly. Paul, did not say don’t drink anymore water just for non-sense… You must remember, that wine has medicinal properties. That is why you will see the reason written in there Paul told Timothy: “…because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.”

When you read the bible, ask the question, what is happening in there? Use proper application of the verses…

I beg to disagree… Maybe you should read more about the crusades, and who most of the time they were after.

And also, have you read about this one crusade… They killed all the Christians in Antioc.
you said…
" if the crusades disprove tje Catholic Church, then they disprove all of Christianity, because there were no other Christians around at the time who one could claim were the “true” Christians who didn’t participate in the crusades."

Have you read about “Montanists, Novatians, Donatists, etc.” and in later they were called Ana-baptist? They all existed, long before Calvin, Zwingli, and Luther did.

They all have been persecuted by the roman empire and the Catholic church, that is why most of them, would hide in woods. And if you will know their doctrine, you will see what they teach is not different from what Jesus and the apostles taught in the bible.

I never said the passage meant to only drink water. I said that if a person just took that one passage out of nowhere, he or she could say that any church that doesn’t force everyone to drink wine is not true, because the passage very clearly instructs that a little wine is to be drunk. This is not an appropriate interpretation, of course, but that is because it is never possible to get an accurate interpretation when taking a single verse out of context. My point is that you cannot take one verse that mentions governments and use it to prove that Christians should never be engaged in something like the crusades, because that principle of interpretation can be used to say all sorts of ridiculous things.

All of those groups that you listed taught things directly contrary to Scripture. They cannot be the true Church.

QUOTE]

Maybe…

Like the Catholic Church said execute those who are not catholics (crusades, inquisition, etc.)… and Dr De Luca of the University of Rome was commended by pope Leo XIII in 1901 when he said, “The Catholic Church has the right and duty to kill heretics by fire and sword.” (Eph. 6:12). “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places”
(Matthew 5:44) “But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you”
"Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

"Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.

“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints…” Ephesians 6:10-18

The Crishtian Armor and Christian Battle…

Did Jesus commend Peter when he cut the soldier’s ear when Jesus was caught? No! He rebuked Peter
Firstly, doesthis prove anything? Of course not, just as your attacks on the crusades and whatnot have no effect. You are arguing by emotion. This is a fallacy. I do not wish to see any arguement that is not based on facts. I can produce just as much evidence of horrible things purportedly done by non-Catholics as you can by Catholics. Whether any of it is true or not does not prove a thing. Even if the Church did participate in such things (which I contend She did not), and even if it were wrong, since when does sin prove that a church or person is not truly of Christ? All churches and all people will always have sin. Indeed, Peter denied Christ, a sin worse than every war and crusade in history combined, and yet he was a leader of the true Church.

As far as the Leo quote, I can find virtually no evidence that it is authentic. The only evidence that exists at all is that of the heresay of one supposed priest. Even reputable anti-Catholic sites have no evidence of this. If it were real, they most certainly would be using it. I am only able to find this quotation on personal anti-Catholic sites, sites so filled with plain nonsense that I cannot hold them credible. Even more is that Mr. Boettner supposedly referenced this quote in his book Roman Catholicism. Any quote used in that book automatically belongs on the bottom of the credibility ladder.

The point is that if this were real, some legitimate source, some encyclopedia would have it. I cannot find such a reference.

Ok… But i would just like you to know that I grew up in a catholic school. BAck when i was in my sophomore through my senior years, i had always been searching catholic encyclopedias as a reference for my report especially on history of the church, church issues, and expecially on the crusades. I know this since, this one was my report. I forgot however the volume of the caatholic encyclopedia. Ok, lets forget about Dr. de Luca, since i just copied it somewhere out there, i too have not seen this in a encyclopedia. But regarding the crudades, i personally have read of it. And regarding the churches i have given you, what do you mean by scriptural and non-scriptural. Have you read their doctrinal stand?

Matthew 28:16 And the eleven disciples went into Galilee, unto the mountain … 18 And Jesus coming, spoke to them, saying: All power is given to me in heaven and in earth. 19 Going therefore, teach ye all nations; baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you …

Jesus clearly instructed his apostles to teach others to comply with the things that He has taught, that did the apostles.
However, as we can see in the bible, as the church grew, there were some of those whose heart wasn’t true for the service of God. That is why we can see 1 John 2:19, “They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they all are not of us”.

Can you see the big picture here? There is a church, and within that church there are some who “went out”. Now, what do you think are the characterisitics of those who went out? They may make a new church with some doctrines copied from the original church and then with doctrines concieved from their own minds and philiosophies.

Now we can see here, that there are already two churches claiming authenticity. How can we know the authentic? Of course, the authentic are those who obeyed fully what Jesus said, “…teaching them to observe all things whatsoever i have commanded you”. Did you realize that Jesus was strict on his command that the church should comply with what he has taught. Jesus, did not tell us, “…teaching them to observe some things whatsoever i have commanded you”.
Ok, now with regard to anti-scriptural… Just a few example.
Did you know what is Baptism in the scriptures? (in greek Baptizo). Jesus even gave a clear example of such… To be burried, submerged, imersed in water, not pour water.
Have you seen in the scriptures, that Jesus teached Mary as our advocate?
Try to look at 1 John 2:1 And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
Mary was never called an advocate by the apostles, but only Jesus.

Like when we pray the rosary, what do we do? ?We have the rosary, and recite again and again, hail mary mother of God…
Check out, Mat. 6:7 “7”: But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

Those were just a few example of what you say scriptural.

And Oh, why is it that we can see in history im sure ou would agree to this priests used latin in churches while majority of the people that belong to the church cant understand latin?
Isn’t the word of God for everyone or just to a select few, and the vast majority are to follow blindly? We can see, that the church wants most of the people ignorant in the word of God at those time. Didn’t God appoint special persons for people to know what God want such as the prophets?

Parishes differ according to the people who volunteer their time. In any case, there is less likely to be as much emphasis on scripture as in the Protestant denominations because Catholics stress the Blessed Sacrament as the “source and summit” of its life. Scripture leads to Christ and is not an end in itself. The Blessed Sacrament is Christ, and is worshipped as God. He has become our bread! Yet, we only receive in proportion to our desire and faith, though the sacrament itself lacks nothing.

But Protestants do not have that; they only have scripture, so everything revolves around that.

I am going to bed now because I am completely exhausted. I will respond to the rest of this tomorrow, but for now I want to address the latin.

The Liturgy of the Church was originally in Greek. At the time, Greek was the “English” of the day. It was the language that everyone spoke. After some time, Greek phased out as the language in standard use, so the Church changed it to latin. This was done because vritually everybody spoke latin. (There were other rites of the Church which did use other languages, of course). Latin was thus used to enable to most number of people possible to understand the Liturgy. Latin remained the most widely used language in the world until the 1700s or so. The Church kept Latin as the Liturgical language because of this.

In the 1960s, the Church changed the Liturgy to permit the vernacular for several reasons. One was that there waa no longer a language so widely used in the world as latin once had been (English had not taken hold then as it has today). Another reason is that the modern age was far more compatible with a vernacular Liturgy than in the past. One thing the Church was always concerned with was making sure that the Liturgy and the Scriptures were accurate and not erroneous in translation. In times past, it was much harder to ensure this. For one thing, the task of maintaining Liturgical accuracy in a time when information took weeks or months to travel was very difficult. Having a single translation made this much easier. Secondly, the basic task of composing so many vernacular Liturgies was much aided by the technology and resources of the time.

So in terms of the Latin, the Church probably did come in late by 100 years or so. In fact, She could have updated the Liturgy at Vatican I had the council not needed to be closed early due to unforseen circumstances. So the fact that the Church did not update this until Vatican II is actually relatively consistent with the time frame that one would have expected.

God Bless, more tomorrow.

Ok… ok…

We see here that Paul might have suggested celibacy… That is if we are unaware of the events that were happening at those time. Paul did not actually suggest celibacy in this verse.
Let’s look what was happening during this time.>> Corinth is suffering from famine during those time.
That is why, Paul suggested that “it’s hard to feed a lot of mouth as of the moment”.
And before i forget, Paul was not actually who suggested it. The Corinthians wrote about this stuff, and ask Paul about it. That is why in the 1 Cor. 7:1- Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me: [It is] good for a man not to touch a woman.
As you see, it clearly shows that Paul answered the letter of the corinthians. it was the corinthians who were asking if it be OK if they won’t get married yet because of the famine.

The Crishtian Armor and Christian Battle…

Did Jesus commend Peter when he cut the soldier’s ear when Jesus was caught? No! He rebuked Peter

eaglesmark…

So, instead of discussion why a normal Joe can not interpret much of scripture accurately…

you choose to come here and slam the people in the church you should belong to.

Either you came to that decision yourself, or your pastor “teaches” you about the Catholic Church… and he/she is probably proud of your “missionary” efforts.

Sorry… you won’t cut it here with that bull… too many Catholics who DO know their faith… and none of them will kill you.

The point is a “normal Joe” can.
Sounds like eaglesmark is part of Christs Church are you not. You may disagree with some of his views but that doesnt mean he is not a member----(Edited out personal remarks)

MrS…

I did not mean to attack anybodies religion here. But since you have written there “Thankfully, we have the catholic church…” What i just showed you is that, the catholic church has a history in which she directly disobeyed the commandments of Jesus Christ.
My drive here actually was if regular joe cant interpret the bible, then who should be in authority. Like when those crusaders marched because they followed the orders of the popes and the church, since they believe its all up to rome and what rome says this is what the bible and God says.

Personally, I grew up as a catholic, and studied in a catholic school from my elementary up until i finished high school. And i personally would go to our library during break time to read catholic encyclopedias back then…
