Can a parish "move" a Holy Day celebration?

There are two issues here. The day of the liturgical celebration at a particular parish, and the day of obligation. The national Bishops conference is given the authority to set Holy Daus of Obligation. I still maintain, an individual bishop or priest cannot move a day of obligation.

I wouldn’t presume to consider myself competent to interpret any of the documents. My posts were based on what I was told by a priest. As I can’t seek clarification from him I was looking for a possible source for what he told me. GNLYC #58 was all I could see as a basis for his view.

Then the priest (who shall remain nameless) who told me might be mistaken. I was informed that it was possible to transfer the “external solemnity” (whatvever that phrase means) to a Sunday providing it was a ‘green’ Sunday. In Father’s defence he is, to the best of my knowledge, well-respected for his liturgical expertise.

I don’t have time to look up any applicable canons but this seems rather odd.

The fact that it is your parish patroness’ feast does add some complications. Perhaps Saturday is the anniversary of the dedication of your parish church. (I believe the dedication day becomes the local solemnity rather than the actual feast day if they differ.) But I wouldn’t think that should change the day of obligatory Mass attendance.

However if the feast of the Assumption is being celebrated one day and the Solemnity of the dedication of Assumption Church (or whatever the formal name of your parish) on another.
