We recently got a new pastor at our church. Just this past week he posted in the bulletin that there will now be a Communion service on Mondays and Thursdays instead of a Mass. People have been going to the daily Mass for decades. We have always had two priests and retired priests to assist at Mass. We are hurt and dumbfounded at his announcement in the bulletin to take away the Mass. Do we have any recourse?

Have you considered politely asking the pastor why he felt it necessary to change two daily Masses to Communion services? If a group of you got together and asked to meet with the pastor, you could say to him, “Father, could you please explain what has happened to make it necessary to change two daily Masses to Communion services?”

There may be practical issues of which you are not aware, and which you might be able to help him resolve. For example, if he does not have enough lay support on those days to justify having a Mass, you could offer to round up volunteer laity. If his reasons are a matter of personal convenience, then and only then might you consider asking the bishop for help in reinstating daily Mass on those days.

What concerns me about your question is that it is phrased as if this parish believes that daily Mass is an entitlement and that, without bothering to speak with him, the parish is assuming that the pastor is acting punitively. Granted, it sounds like the pastor could have better prepared the parish for this change, but that does not mean that parishioners should react as if the pastor is acting maliciously.
