We are expecting our first and we are trying to figure out who will the god parents of our baby will be, we have named a few and unfortunately my best friend is not Catholic so she is not included in the list. We have been privileged to have a spiritual director who married us. My husband wants him to baptize our baby when the time comes, but I was wondering if he can be a god parent too.

any thoughts?

Yes, a Priest can be a God Parent. The Catechism tells us who can be a God Parent and it does not exclude Priest. My friends parish Priest is his God Father. So the answer is yes, Priest can be God Parents.

Can he officiate the sacrament and be a god father then? Or should another priest officiate so he can be god parent?

I have been to one baptism in which the priest who performed the baptism was also the Godfather. This is not a priest who would have knowingly broken any rules against it.

I don’t know much about your issue but just wanted to say congratulations :heaven:

It’s always glorious when a new soul is created.

Thank you. We are really thankful for this little soul in my womb and really excited to meet him/her soon. Its the first grand child for my parents so my mom is extra protective of me. 🙂 its understandable. We really want our spiritual director to be a part of this as well. Thats why i asked.
