Can a priest hear a confession without his stole and black robe

Yes.

The stole is the traditional sign of the priesthood but it doesn’t invalidate your confession if it’s not worn.

Remember that it is the indelible mark left on the soul by Holy Orders that makes a man a priest, not anything he wears or does not wear, so do not worry about your confession.

Already answered but one last thought if there’s any doubt.

I’m a researcher. I can do my work in my pajamas, but I wear work clothes to the office as a sign of my station. The priestly vestments hold a similar function.

I have experienced priests hearing confessing in T-shirt or Polo shirt without stole. It just felt different although the Sacrament was still a valid Sacrament. And I know some Jesuit priests who almost never wear their Roman collar. Personally I like to see a priest with the Roman collar. Not that the clothes make them a better priest, but it shows his position and authority.

He can hear a confession in his pajamas. Sacraments aren’t dependent on what a priest wears. A bishop can validly ordain a priest in his pajamas.

“I once ordained a priest in my pajamas. What he was doing in my pajamas, I’ll never know!”

I guess in theory, you could be out to dinner with a priest and he could hear your confession.

I often go to an Opus Dei Church. One day I took my son for confession and we found the priest in the garden. He said “we can have confession right here” so I left them alone and went into the Church to pray. So it can be done although it is not the standard.

For some reason this thread reminds me of the apocryphal story of the old liberal nun who was dying. They called the local priest to come and anoint her. As he got ready, she opened her eyes and said, 'If I had a [male appendage] I could do that!" The priest said, 'Well, I usually use my thumb." At which point all assembled laughed and he anointed her.
