Can a Sunday homily be too long?

All you have heard? Did you not read the link I provided from the vatican?

Are you sure they are not squirming just like you didn’t hear about the Vaitcan saying they shouldn’t last longer than 8 minutes?

And we should care what the head of the synod office thinks why exactly?

Perhaps because the short homilies we currently have are catechizing people so brilliantly that they all understand that they are not to abort, not to use contraception, to attend Mass on Sundays without fail whenever possible, that hell is real, that mortal sin is real and that Latin and chant are actually A Good Thing ™ per Vatican II?

People used to be good listeners - they were trained to be. Have you read some of the political speeches of the late 1800s? Or even up to the mid-1900s?

We are trained from the cradle to expect action, excitement, strong emotion, good voices, & good looks. Without those things to grab our attention, I think the average attention span is maybe 5 minutes. I’m a pessimist.

True that. Even movies - they used to pretty routinely be over two hours and actually tell a story - with multiple plotlines and characters and so on - or people would feel jipped. Today Gone With The Wind would just skip from the burning of Atlanta over to the final scene between Rhett and Scarlett in about half a minute flat, and Ben Hur just wouldn’t get made, because all anyone will remember is the chariot race, right?

In fact you may even be something of an optimist - advertisers only get 30 seconds and even then people usually skip over or ignore them.

Well, what exactly is the function of the head of the synod office, since the organisation he heads is so great and authoritative that it gets zero mention on the Vatican website or anywhere else that I can find?

If you put in Synod of Bishops in the search engine of the Vatican web site you should bring up many articles.

The Synod of Bishops, in the Catholic Church is an advisory body for the Pope. It is “a group of bishops who have been chosen from different regions of the world and meet together at fixed times to foster closer unity between the Roman Pontiff and bishops, to assist the Roman Pontiff with their counsel in the preservation and growth of faith and morals and in the observance and strengthening of ecclesiastical discipline, and to consider questions pertaining to the activity of the Church in the world”.[1]

I assume you did not read my link so here is it again. It explains where the remarks came from and why. You may disagree with him but you should care what he writes just out of respect of his office of an Arch Bishop.

I respect the Archbishop’s opinion (and it is merely his interpretation of what the Synod may or may not have actually said) but since he is but one Archbishop, and not MY Archbishop at that, and further is speaking on an issue that is neither a matter of faith, morals nor discipline, his opinion is not one that carries enormous heft.
