Can a 'traditional' Catholic prefer the OF?

Yes, because that assumption is justified. It just doesn’t make sense. It’s like saying you’re Socialist and disregard the lower class, or saying you’re Communist but support a free-market economy. They really cannot be reconciled together.
I wasn’t reconciling playing drums at Mass and being a traditionalist. Again, the point was to show that people build up notions and assumptions based off of definitions. The example I gave is a simple one which shows how one item will cause people to blithely disregard everything about a person and form assumptions purely on that one issue. Like I said, some people jumped from “this guy is solid and doctrinally sound” to “you’re leading people to Hell, heretic”.

That’s what assumptions and definitions will get you sometimes.

And yes, the definition did come across as a bit hostile. A bit belittling too, at least towards those who love Blessed John Paul II and who actually like Vatican II for some of the items that were discussed at it.

Yes, even if the Ordinary Form is in Latin. Traditionalists commonly say that they would rather attend a Traditional Latin Mass in English than an Ordinary Form in Latin.
I hear that too but where were they in the 60’s when the old Mass was being said in the ICEL vernacular? Besides, most people today couldn’t really tell the difference between the OF in Latin and the EF.

Can you clarify this, please? It seems like you are reiterating what the person said but then wondering why people didn’t have a problem with ICEL vernacular Masses of the EF/Tridentine rubric. If I’m reading you correctly, you’re wondering why people are staying consistent with their claims? Besides, where was WHO in the 1960’s? Sheesh, man, that was 42ish years ago. Where were they? At church, getting pinched by their mom to stay quiet and quit squirming. Where are they now? Well, it seems they are occupying the pews of “traditional” parishes, or just going-along-to-get-along in the OF. I suppose actions speak louder than words.

Also, I can tell a marked difference in the procedures and symbolism of the OF and EF, just in my short and new exposure to both. The language has basically nothing to do with it. English, Latin, Greek, Aramaic, Hebrew, Klingon… whatever, as long as the understanding and reverence are there. I don’t see reverence, nor understanding, in the OF as it is often conducted. Great potential, and I certainly can see the “vision” of whomever came up with the minutia. But then again, I can foresee great love and purity in the act of married couples having sex. I can also see it devolving into a cess pool of using and abusing. Same goes with the Mass. It just seems extremely hard to abuse the EF from what I can tell. Especially when the entire congregation is mouthing/whispering the Mass along with the priest. The OF seems much more loose. It also seems absolutely abused from everything I’ve seen.

I realize that as a new Catholic I’m walking on eggshells and toes, but, I can tell you as a former Protestant of no less than (3) denominational experience- the OF is indeed more “Protestant”. By that I mean- I can’t tell what the heck is specifically going on nor can I tell what anything actually means. It’s all just this hodge-podge of vague blah. Furthermore, I cannot count on going to an OF Mass and not having the priest basically bungle it all up, nor the parishioners, in terms of displayed reverence.

I also cannot count on going to an OF Mass in X city and having it be the same in Y city or Z city. Even between parishes it seems to differ greatly in terms of how things are conducted. Not the rubric/procedure so much as the general aura of the priest and people.

What I can tell you is this, though: I CAN count on going to an EF Mass and outside of the homily (which would obvious vary priest to priest in terms of style, etc), from what I understand, I will know exactly what is going on, why, and what it represents.

Even worse, I may accidentally end up at one of these so-called “youth” Masses. Whatever the heck that actually is, besides a bastardization of worship, I have no idea.

Don’t they have Catholic youth groups? I dunno, I’m 28 and new to it, so I can’t say. But, if they want to play guitar, drums, etc they can feel free to do it some place other than the Mass. I could barely keep up with the wacky meter the band was doing- and they were playing WAY too fast. Focus on the melody and the place it puts you in regard to the message of the hymns. Entertainment is not between the time you walk in and walk out of the church. I dunno, maybe it is, if you want to make a spectacle of the Eucharist and everything leading up to it.

The priest at the FSSP parish I attend is very solemn and somber when conducting the Mass, but his homilies are exciting. I sense a deep respect and awe for the Mass and all things RCC in Fr. Dupre. Maybe I have just been exposed to an outstanding example of the FSSP roster. Maybe he is par for the course. I really have no idea and I don’t plan on driving to Denver for the specific reason of finding out.

Part 2 below.

Wrote this yesterday in this thread but then decided to sleep on posting it:
  1. No, I don’t want to shake your hand. Shake my hand before or after service. I’m here to worship. Focus on Jesus for all the peace HE provides. I’m not being uncharitable or unfriendly, but when I enter the sanctuary, I’m TRYING to focus on one thing, and one thing only. And it ain’t related to anyone in front, behind, or to the side of me.
  2. Get on your dang knees to receive the Host, and keep your grubby, unwashed hands away from our Lord in the presence of the Host. Medical issue? Fine. I totally get it. No problem at all. Disrespect in the name of ecumenism and a spirit of reform and being approachable to the people… or whatever the excuse is? I guess Jesus didn’t get the memo that He’s out of touch.
  3. Jokes, Father, seriously? Tell jokes after service. I don’t care about your little witty take on insert here. I especially don’t care about your favorite football team. Even if it is Notre Dame. I want to hear instruction on doctrine, the Church view on major news events, and understanding of more tricky Church doctrine- such as Fr. Dupre did at the Mass for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.
  4. I’m a guitar player. Your guitarist sucks. He can play at the parish/diocese talent show if he pleases. My guitar doesn’t go inside a church. It did for years and I KNOW what the internal struggle with pride is regarding performance in church. Many others I played with in various church bands feel the same. Keep those dang guitars out of church!
  5. Where, oh where, did all the prayers go? Those dang “traditionalists” stole em? What’s that under the rug over there in the corner? Oh, there they are.
  6. I did not realize my name is East, nor my neighbors in the pews. Turn around, Father. You’re presenting the Sacrifice to God. As I can tell, I am definitely not HIM.
  7. Why do I feel like I’m back in a Protestant church? I ran away from that. Stop it, seriously. If you want to be a Protestant clergyman, the Lutherans are hiring.
  8. That has to be the most girlish looking Altar bo…what the heck! That’s a girl! Aye.
  9. I say this all not condemning it, nor seeking to be in disagreement with Rome. I just can’t wait till all the Priests ordained right after Vatican II are GONE or realize that the Church did just fine for many, many, many years by remaining itself.
And don’t say I’m being ridiculous because there are sycophantic men occupying the role of Bishop and Priest who love to do nothing but pander to liberal, marxist fecal matter. Well, that’s fine and they can do that. But I will not be going to their parish and if asked why, I’ll say this: I came into the Catholic Church for Catholicism, NOT super-happy-feel-good vagueness. Nor for Catholicism-Lite. Nor for Protestantism-Heavy.

It took two months to find out there is an FSSP parish locally. I’ll continue in the OF RCIA program, in conjunction with the EF Saturday Catechism classes. But I will never, if I can help it, attend another Protestant-esque service again. The first time, a Saturday “youth mass”… I almost walked out. I knew something was unusual when I walked in to see a full band and my heart dropped. I stayed, but the entire time I just kept seeing abuse after abuse of the beauty of the Mass. And the more I go to EF Mass, the more I just get sick when thinking back on what I have seen happen in OF.

Is it the fault of the form and am I saying the Pope is wrong for allowing it? NO.

Am I saying that people, including clergy, need to get their collective heads out of their 4th points of contact and quit with all this stupidity and abuse of the Mass? ABSOLUTELY.

How can one judge if he’s never attended an OF Mass in Latin? I’d drive an hour to get to one if the EF weren’t around. No way I would drive that far for any English Mass. But then I don’t consider myself a trad either. 🙂

You’re confusing language with form.

The form, in its ability to be abused, is the issue.

To abuse the EF, it has to be extraordinarily blatant… or ordinarily blatant, as it were.
Edit to add:

However, for what it’s worth, I can see the OF in Latin being less prone to abuse. Why? Because the language, however unimportant outside of its meaning and intent, encourages respect. I love the flow of Latin, I love the reverence and specificity of the liturgy, and I LOVE knowing I am attending the same form as many who came before me- who also came before Vatican II and the hippie movement.

My OF priest straight up admitted he saw rampant abuses of the Mass after Vatican II. He said it’s largely toned down, but I have no idea how you tone down disrespect. A little disrespect is still way too much.

I was still making changes while you were replying. Hope this isn’t confusing to others.

No worries, I feared my edited addendum might end up confusing things.

How typical is this as indicative of the OF in Latin?:

YouTube Link

If typical, have no real issues with it. However, I believe it perfectly demonstrates what I’ve been saying the entire time, if in fact this is a typical OF in Latin: the OF is as easily abused as it is beautiful. 😉

Since I know of no OF Latin masses near my area, I’ll be sticking with EF.

I just skimmed through it as to not delay an answer, so I am saying this with a grain of salt in case there are any caveats I overlooked.

Yes. Much more reverent. Certainly nothing like OF around here that I’ve seen. However, I couldn’t help but notice the altar rail and placement of other necessary functions which seem much more traditional and less, well, new.
