Hoping for it is not the same as asserting it is definite. You might want to read Han Urs von Balthasar’s “Dare We Hope that all Men Be Saved.” We also constantly pray in the mass for all the departed to be brought into the light of God’s presence. It would be a lack of faith to pray for something that we believe can’t happen. Jimmy Akin may love the idea that some are going to wind up in hell, but I don’t share his enthusiasm. I hope nobody winds up there.

It is right to pray that all men would turn to God and beg His forgiveness. However, we cannot believe and teach a heresy condemned by the Church simply because it may make us feel better.

Should we pray all will turn to God? Yes, pray harder every day.

Should we teach and decieve ourselves into thinking that all will one day be reconciled to God against His justice? No, it is heresy

Believe me, I’m as hardcore as they come!

All the teachings of the Catholic Church are just and merciful, and I believe all of them.

On a personal level, though, I get the message that we are called to be merciful to our fellows. To me, this is the overriding message of Jesus to us. He gave us a new commandment, that we should love others as He loves us. He also lays out a fairly specific process of being merciful to others, in terms of how we are to carry this out.

The ultimate judgement of God as to salvation is His prerogative alone. I hope to be saved, and I hope for all other people to be saved as well. No one still living has arrived, we’re all still in a process, and the outcome is a mystery known only to God. We don’t know who has been saved, or who will be saved. We throw ourselves on the mercy of God, try our best to align our desires with His, and hope. I think it is fruitless to wonder who is going to Hell and who is going to Heaven. It is hard enough to just love as best we can. Loving takes all my energy, and I fail at it terribly.

God has had amazing mercy on my sins. I just have to believe that, if he can forgive the terrible things I’ve done, and still do, then he can forgive anything, and wants to.
