Can all Catholic teaching be traced back to the Vatican?

Can you clarify what you mean by that, Wesley7?

The gospel, scripture, is the root basis of Catholic teaching, Wesley.

God grant you many blessings, Trishie 🙂

Catholic doctrine and dogma. (ie) Catholic teaching(s).**

**Trishie said it quite well. The basis of the teachings of the Church is Scripture.

However, it’s not Scripture alone, but Scripture as understood in Tradition, which is the life of the Holy Spirit in the Church.

Something does not have to be decreed from the Vatican for it to be Church teaching.

Does this answer your question?**

The short answer is “yes” - all doctrine and dogma can be found in teachings by the Vatican. But that isn’t the first source. So it might be more correct to say that all Catholic teaching can be traced back *through *the Vatican. The true source of virtually all all Catholic teaching is the Bible. The Church also uses the teachings of the early Church fathers - most of whom were around and wrote before the founding of Vatican City - and Tradidions they handed down.

If you look up any doctrine of the Church in the Catechism, you will see in the footnotes many of the sources used in the development of the doctrine. A searchable online Cathechism can be found here Often the footnotes will also list the original Church document that spelled out the “why” of the teaching as well as the “where”. Many of those documents can be found on the Vatican website.

Yes, this answer is very similiar to what it says in the Orthodox Church by Bp. Kallistos Ware.
