Can an alcoholic be accepted?

I plan on attending RCIA in the fall with a profound interest in the Catholic faith.

I’m also a recovered alcoholic, sober through the grace of God and the 12 steps.

That said, is there an alternative to taking the wine at communion upon reception into the Church? Or maybe, not take it at all? As I can not, or will not ingest alcohol of any kind (I don’t even use mouthwash with alcohol in it).

God bless your perseverence in sobriety! It is perfectly acceptable not to receive from the Cup; in receiving only the Host you are still receiving the whole Christ, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity.

You can take just the Host.
When the priest does his Sick Calls,
he never takes the wine, it has spilled and broke,
makes a mess, but the host is all you’ll need.

I am with you! I too am an alcoholic and my last drink was on July 23, 2011. Thanks to God’s grace I was received into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil this year.

I receive the Eucharist by the bread alone and that is absolutely fine.

As the previous poster said, whether you take the consecrated host, wine, or a small part of the host, you receive the body, blood, soul and divinity of Christ in its entirety.

In the same manner, people who have serious gluten allergies may take communion by the chalice alone (as the host must be wheat based).

The Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of our Lord is fully present in both the bread and the Wine. Accepting either is the same as accepting both. You never need to accept from the Cup

Yes, you may recieve or Lord in either the concecrated host or the wine. You do not need to take both.

Just as an aside please look up the Venerable Matt Talbot. He was a man who struggled with alcohol addiction, was able to overcome it and is now being considered for Sainthood. He may be able to help give you strength if you find that you should ever so need it.

Welcome home, and congratulations on your sobriety. My former vice is smoking, last cigarette was on 25 October, 2011. In other words, we all have struggles.

The other posts address the most important issue, however I would like to add this:

The Lord would not allow you to fall back into sin through the gift of recieving him! You are safe in his arms.

Congratulations on your sobriety! I am somewhat alergic to alcohol and I only take the host. No problem. Welcome Home.
