Can an Americanized Christianity Sustain itself?

Certainly an interesting article. The idea presented of an Americanized Christianity would explain how “progressive” Christians can be so closely allied with secularist. Christ seems to be a reflection of the interior of the individual believer and so each person’s version of Christ is acceptable. He almost becomes a characiture that is an amalgamation of the individual and Christ.

To the question poised in the title, I don’t know if Americanized Christianity could survive. It would seem that road eventually leads to secularism. If God is just like me, then do I really need Him?
 
No, I don’t believe it can. Without Absolute Truth, it becomes a free for all…picking and choosing and pushing the envelope. Towards what?

Americanized things are set up to fit within the frantic man-made pace of an economic system, namely free market capitalism, that is consumption oriented to a fault.

So, Americans get easily caught up in the rat race, and boxed in by economics. The pace does not provide sufficient time for prayer, meditation, reflection, or living an examined life. We can only sustain that pace if we fit the system into the greater context of our religion, and its traditions.

For example, the Christmas season has been totally commercialized. What a shame. It is important to keep things in perspective, and reduce the economic focus so as to live a more balanced season, focused on the spiritual aspects of the Nativity, and its true meaning.

This can be a struggle until our focus shifts to where it really belongs.
