I am Eastern Catholic and have had someone ask me to sponsor their child on confirmation day.

As far as I know, the specific criteria for eligibility is a person who is at least 16 years of age, a fully initiated practicing Catholic, and not the candidate’s mother or father.

I have also found in one document that: Non-Catholics, former Catholics, and members of Churches not in union with Rome may not serve as Godparents for Confirmation. Indicating that I should be able to sponsor the child.

Has anyone got anymore info on this subject?

Eastern Catholics are in union with Rome as far as I know.
PS:I am an Eastern Catholic

I would be surprised if you couldn’t. Our rites are different but would could both fulfil our Sunday obligations by going to each other’s respective Mass/Divine Liturgy.

Of course you can! I’ve done it myself. You are as fully Catholic as any Roman Catholic. You are NOT a member of a church “not in union with Rome”. Go for it!!👍👍

You are correct in terms of the canonical requirements 🙂
You should speak with the director of religious education/formation in that parish to learn more about the actual role of a sponsor in addition to just being present at the Rite of Confirmation. Sponsors usually find the process rewarding, and enriching to their own faith journey.

Yes you can and I must say that our priest at our Latin Rite Parish is very knowledgeble about both the eastern and latin rites of our Catholic faith. We have visitors sometimes from the Byzantine Catholic Church about an hour away and he gives their baby who I would guess to be a few months old communion.

Last Sunday, at our Latin OF Mass, our pastor gave Holy Communion to one baby. While I do not know what rite the family was, I do know from reading his blog that Father knows there are Byzantine Catholics in his parish, and also that he is fairly knowledgeable about the Eastern Catholics. 😉
