Can animals experience "sexual" abuse?

as far as I know, the Church teaches that animals do not have any rights. Only a person can have rights. Animals are things, not people, and things do not have rights. Trees, mountains, rivers, flowers, ants, horses: none of these have rights.

So, I agree that a separate charge of “sexual abuse” is strange. Animal cruelty is legislated because of the damage it does to the person, not to the animal (which is the person’s property). Unless some pagan ideas about the “equality” of humans and animals (i.e. man is just another animal) are creeping into our legislature (and I would say they are), a charge of “animal abuse” should be enough to sentence a person to whatever punishment befits the crime. The judge can put the convicted on a sex offender registry if the abuse warrants it.

I agree that an additional charge of “sexual abuse” suggests that the animal has rights equal to a person. That’s pagan, not Christian.
Read the Catechism again carefully With respect you are not quite right at all. One does not have to believe that animals are better than humans, or that they are even equal, to believe that they are entitled to live without cruelty, for their own sake’s. Most people who eat meat will probably agree with me that they do not like the idea of the animals being tortured before they are finally killed.

Careful what you say there. My grandparents, and parents, among other good Christians I know, refer to their pets as their ‘children’ or ‘furbabies’. I have never doubted their love for me or their other human children.

No one is forcing you to love animals or treat them like your children, but with respect I think you have no place to make thinly veiled insults at those who do.
Some people use it innocently enough, but I’ve had numerous people tell me that their pets are like their children and then go into making examples. “Telling me I can come over to your house but can’t bring my dog over is like if I told you that you can come over but have to leave your baby somewhere else”, or “telling me I can spend the night but my dog has to sleep outside is like saying you can spend the night but the baby has to sleep on the porch”.

It’s not always that extreme, but it is always creepy.

And there have been numerous polls over the years that show most Americans value their own pets more than other people’s babies and would give them preference in a house fire.

That’s true, and I don’t have a problem with some modicum of punishment for people who are violent towards and abuse animals, it just shouldn’t approach the penalties given to people who do the same to people. Having sex with an animal can sometimes be abusive, and sometimes not. As I said, they don’t experience sexual trauma they way people do, it isn’t really an appropriate comparison. For animals it is an additional form of physical or emotional(of a sort) abuse.

In most, if not all, countries the penalties do not approach those given to those who do the same to people anyway. Certain non-Western cultures do however hold certain animals on the same level as humans but that in itself has not caused the people in those cultures to treat people less than. In fact it can be said that people from those cultures (Im not talking about neo-pagans from Western countries btw) are some of the most respectful and gentle people in the world.

Now there are many people who do want the penalties for animal abuse to be raised. However that is a debate for another thread.

 Do you really not understand it? Even if the sexual act is non-violent, it is still considered abusive because an animal, like a child (yes i am comparing an animal to a child bring on the flames) is unable to give informed consent. I am not going to go on as to why the issue of consent is such an important one as I m sure you are an intelligent person and can understand thus far.

By that same logic one can say that about children. A 6 year old child despite being human like a 40 year old woman, will not experience sexual abuse the same way for a myriad of reasons. It does not lessen the severity of the act however. Of course an animal will not experience abuse in the same way. Using the term ‘sexual abuse’ has zero implications on the issue of the equality of animals and humans. It is merely a comment or observation on the nature of the act itself.

I m sorry you find it creepy. 🤷

However many people, for many reasons, do love their pets similarly to how one loves their offspring. We can argue about the ‘rights and wrongs’ of it till the cows come home, the fact is it is not a crime to adore one’s pet. Such people might find it difficult to spend overnight trips apart from said pet. The poor animal will be more traumatised as one cannot convey to them effectively the way we tell a child, ‘Dont worry mummy will be back home soon’.

If you do not want an animal in your house, you do not need me to tell you that that is within your rights. However your friend with the pet will just have to make a decision. Issues like this are really not a huge thing to be concerned about.

Ever heard of the untouchables in India? They are treated as less than animal.

I see no reason at all to believe that an animal is going to be somehow more traumatized by sexual abuse than they would be from any other abuse which is equivalent. Sex is not personal or emotional for them. It isn’t even pleasurable. There is no need for an additional category here. Some of these “sexually abused” animals probably didn’t even know anything happened, such as at the horse brothels.

About India - believe me I m well aware of the issues there, including the caste system. Never said the country was perfect. If you are referring to their veneration of cows, well for many of them, they respect that the cow should not be consumed for meat, and it stops there. Many of the more modern ones, who pick and choose from their religion i.e. refrain from eating beef but still adhere to things like the dowry and caste system (which is not restricted to religion in India btw) do not care for the actual welfare of cows.
But I digress.

I dont think it is relevant how traumatised the animal is going to be or not going to be when thinking about what we call things. First of all, we do not know that the animal does not feel added trauma, or how much. So it is irrelevant in that sense. I agree with you to an extent(if it was you) in one of your other posts where you said that it is about the human. Yes in this sense we call it sexual abuse to highlight how the human perpetrator has gone beyond plain cruelty into something deeply perverse. At this stage it really does not make a difference to the victimised animal what we call it. However we highlight it as sexual abuse so as to emphasise, both to the perpetrator and rest of society, the extra perverse nature of the act.

I didn’t post that, but it does make sense. I am thinking strictly along the lines of the question that is the thread topic.

To clarify, they are no longer called “Untouchables.” Gandhi called them “Harijans” or children of God. Laws have long been passed prohibiting discrimination and approving pro active actions to help them. Cows are sacred in Hinduism but they certainly do not have better lives than people.

Perverts do not have boundaries. I know of a case where a man committed sexual acts on anything he could lay his hands on. They caught him with a newborn kid as in baby goat. It died. I felt sick reading about it. People do it to babies too, do the babies understand about sexual abuse? They like animals feel the pain. It is about the humans who do it, adults with free will and full understanding. Sexual abuse is about power and sex.

This is ignorant. Watch any nature show for half an hour to see how much significance sex has in animal society. Sexual abuse is confusing for animals and disrupts the human/animal relationship. Anecdotally, people who rehab sexually abused animals do observe effects which differ from the effects of physical abuse.

Most domestic animals, being domesticated, are incredibly attuned to humans; there are many stories of animals distinguishing or attempting to distinguish honest people from people with bad intentions. Think about how disordered a person who abuses animals sexually must be. That registers.

I’m certainly not an animal psychologist, a theologian, nor an attorney, but I hope at least one of the perpetrators got bitten for his perverted act! It would serve him right!
