Good afternoon! Can anybody tell me the meaning and use of a four sided three-dimensional cross? I’m unable to upload an image (new user), but it is made of bronze or brass. It is about 6 1/2 inches tall. It has one upright but four arms (so it looks like an ‘X’ from the top). It has a small piece of chain fixed to the top so I’m guessing it was made to hang from something?

Sometimes you see a cross of that kind but larger and made of stone, on a church roof. I have always assumed the purpose is to show that it’s clearly a cross, from whichever direction people are looking at it.

Thanks. The only other example I have found online is a stone cross on a Church roof and I’d agree with you on the reason for that. But this one seems as if it may have served some specific use within a Church, may have been part of something? I’m baffled.

Yes it is! I wasn’t familiar with that painting but just had a look. So, it’s similar in structure, with the four arms but less ‘chunky’. And looking at it straight-on it looks a little like what I’ve seen referred to as a ‘Syriac Orthodox cross’.

It seems he had one made to use as a model:

…just as it is a tall order for me to ask anyone to identify this without seeing a photo!

I don’t remember what, exactly, the rules are about new members posting links, but I don’t think you’ll have to wait very long. @Tis_Bearself is always very well informed about these things. Tis, can you help?

That’s the Dali painting which I looked at - the cross is the right form, 3-dimensional, 4 sided, but the wrong shape arms…

I found this one, inspired by the Dali painting. Was yours more delicate and less chunky (couldn’t think of a better word)?

The page linked below describes the promotion system in a general way. The exact parameters (number of topics, posts, minutes, days, percentages, etc.) may have been adjusted by the CAF administrators from the given defaults.

@PattyIt yes, definitely less chunky. I still can’t upload a photo 😦

One of the more challenging assignments in Technical Communication at Texas was to verbally describe a (complexly) drawn shape so that someone could redraw it from our description.

You did rather well, as I figured it out at once. (Although I had seen the Dali version.)

Well, it’s obviously not a necklace! 😂😂😂. It’s lovely, though…

Perhaps meant to hang from a ceiling or very large chandelier in a church? It’s meant to hang from something! I assume it’s a bit heavy, too?

I think I’d feel a bit top heavy if I wore that on a necklace!!
It weighs about 9oz.
Yes, maybe it could have hung from a chandelier, purely decorative. I wondered if it had served more of a practical purpose, part of a ceremonial object?
