I second those comments!

Richard Dawkins has definitely acquired a huge fan club, but I’ve come across several atheists who are critical of him.

Incidentally, Its been highly satisfying and instructive reading the many knowledgeable eloquently written contributions to this thread.

His target is mainly fundamentalism but by no means his only target.

Though in his defence I do applaud him for supporting the Church of England’s stand on the issue of those Cinema chains who have refused to screen the Lords prayer advert, describing himself as a “cultural Anglican” during an interview he gave on the subject.

Wow that is dark and disturbing. I had no idea that he felt that way. And note that he is basing his claims on the testimony of Catholics not his own opinion. A very damning appraisal. Actually this explains a lot regarding how he thinks and operates. He has taken a few folks with dark and sordid tales while discounting the majority of folks who have had the opposite experiences with their faith. There is no balance in this assessment. The conclusion is felt at the opening and a few supporting (anecdotal) bits of evidence are given.

Note the arrogance too, I mean even some SMART people have fallen into this Catholic trap. When I hear those kind of arguments I hear the appeal to self centered arrogance. Sort of like: if you are smart than of course you will agree with me. Some college professors fall into this trap since they are surrounded by folks who have to agree with them or get kicked out. For some, power corrupts very easily.

On third read I hear the voice of a child. Smart yes, but thinks he knows WAY more than he really does. In this case blinded by his own arrogance and looking around for ways to feed it.

I think publishing that sort of material crosses the line into being a hate crime.
There isn’t a reference and I wonder whether it was written before or after elevatorgate, when he demonstrated how in tune he is with women and their real issues.
I don’t think of him as being smart at all. He just knows how to rile up a crowd:
