Can anyone bring up the gifts to the altar?

Can anyone bring up the gifts to the altar? I mean, do the people have to be Catholics? My husband frequently drives me to Sunday Mass, despite the fact he is of a different faith. Recently, my husband nearly fell out of the pew when the usher came by and asked us to bring up the gifts (:eek:), as my husband felt that it may have been wrong for a Protestant to do that.
 
Yes, so far as I am aware, anyone may bring up the gifts to the altar. However, if your husband feels uncomfortable doing so, he may politely decline. “Thank you for asking, but I’d prefer not to,” is one way in which the honor may be declined.
