Can anyone here who believes in the Protestant Christian doctrine which allows for "Personal Interpretation of the Bible" explain this?

The same way you explain these men:
The Bad Popes is a 1986 book by E. R. Chamberlin documenting the lives of eight of the most controversial popes (papal years in parentheses):
Pope Stephen VI (896-897), who had his predecessor Pope Formosus exhumed, tried, de-fingered, briefly reburied, and thrown in the Tiber[1]
Pope John XII (937-964), who gave land to a mistress, murdered several people, and was killed by a man who caught him in bed with his wife.
Pope Benedict IX (1032-1044,1045,1047-1048), who “sold” the Papacy
Pope Boniface VIII (1294-1303), who is lampooned in Dante’s Divine Comedy
Pope Urban VI (1378-1389), who complained that he did not hear enough screaming when Cardinals who had conspired against him were tortured.[2]
Pope Alexander VI (1492-1503), a Borja, who was guilty of nepotism and whose unattended corpse swelled until it could barely fit in a coffin.[3]
Pope Leo X (1513-1521), a spendthrift member of the Medici family who once spent 1/7 of his predecessors’ reserves on a single ceremony[4]
Pope Clement VII (1523-1534), also a Medici, whose power-politicking with France, Spain, and Germany got Rome sacked

I don’t believe in the “doctrine of personal interpretation” - solid biblical interpretation requires more than just what my limited abilities could fathom. So you aren’t hurting my feelings a bit.

However, for you to defend the Catholic Church’s beliefs on biblical interpretation by using demented, mentally ill people who were MURDERERS as the example of what happens if one does embrace personal interpretation is not just the building of a Strawman, it’s downright sick, and it’s mean. It even goes beyond being uncharitable - it is downright evil. No reputable Catholic that I know of thinks such a thing.

That’s just morally wrong. I thought even you were above this, Jimmy. You are in my prayers.

How about trying to defend the doctrine of “personal interpretation”…This ought to be good….

Peace 🙂
Have I broken in on a lovers’ quarrel here…?

Hmmm, I’m not sure I can defend a doctrine of personal interpretation. I didn’t know there was such a doctrine anywhere.

Since OS Luke spoiled my ambush here, I’ll just reveal it. It doesn’t matter what authority you refer me to in order to find out what the exact list of required Catholic beliefs. Human communication is always somewhat ambiguous. If I don’t quite understand what the catechism says, maybe I have to go to the Vatican website. Wherever I find that confusing, maybe I go to a local priest. Wherever I find him confusing, maybe I go to a bishop. If I’m not sure about him, maybe the official proclamation of the national council of bishops. Where I end up doesn’t matter. The only way I can think I know what the Catholic church requires is to depend on my personal interpretation of what some authority at some level says.

Personal interpretation doesn’t need to be a doctrine any more than logic. It will come into play, no matter the tradition or authoritative statement.

Oh, I don’t know about evil, it’s pretty standard rhetoric. “Guilt by association,” you know. Try to ignore that stuff and focus on the core argument, however badly presented.

I like Jimmy B’s use of smileys, anyway. Very creative. Didn’t think the flowers thing could be used so sarcastically.

Hello again O.S.LUKE,

So, you don’t believe that the horrible events listed here, were caused by bad or errant interpretations of the Bible.

My first posts here, involved real people and real acts that are widely known.

Do you believe that the person’s mentions here, were influence by their own personal interpretations of the Bible or not?

I believe that the public record shows that they were influenced by their own, errant interpretations of the Bible and that’s my point.

Thank you for your post.

It follows from the OP.
Okay, I see your point. I’m so used to ignoring the verbal garbage around clumsy attacks like Jimmy B’s that I totally forgot he started with a list of folks who viewed themselves rather pontifically.

Can I give this thread five more stars?
I think you should give it five moons. All you’ve done so far is moon the other posters.

C’mon, I’m waiting for a coherent response, not tissues to wipe your nose for you.

Yeah that kind of was the point. You know the saying “power corrupts absolute power corrupts absolutely”.

The horrible events you listed were caused by mentally ill people who assumed the role of demagogue. Now THAT is public record. If you were a career cop, you of all people ought to know how mental illness affects people, and what kind of people will follow such. Some of them walk the streets, some of them have means, and some of them can fake sanity enough to cause real trouble.

Bad or errant interpretations of the Bible do not always lead to mass suicide. That is the strawman you are erecting.

All, good points. 👍

The Bible clearly refers to false prophets. The people you listed fall in that category.

The problem is that not everything that a false prophet believes is false. False prophets mix truth and error.

So therefore you can not say that just because false prophets believe theological point ‘X’, that therefore theological point ‘X’ is false.

Hey, false prophets (at least those you listed) believe in God. Does that mean that belief in God is false?

I have a question about Jimmy’s motivation. He seems focused on Protestants. I’m not sure of his motivation. Is he trying to help Protestants “see the truth?” or just have a “one up manship” on Protestants? Is he interested in Apologetics? Does he want to have people believe? Is it his idea of mission work? If so why not go out into the non-christian world where people don’t even know Jesus? Just curious.

Yes. 👍

Took a quick look at your blog. So I have a better idea about you. I see why you choose the method you do. Confrontation and discipline is a way of life for you. Now that I know a little bit about you I can deal. You have a nice family BTW. And thanks for your service to your city and country.

Thank you for the kind words. God bless you!
