Can anyone reccomend a prayer that can give you a deeper relationship with God. I feel The Spirit in me, telling me to become closer to Him and I thirst for Him on a daily basis (and that’s what I’ve been praying for). Suggestions?

Dear friend

Whatever words you say when you pray God knows the desire in your heart and the Holy Spirit prays with you, so you might like to just sit down and speak to Jesus as your best friend and tell Him all about these deep longings of your heart. The best prayers we say to God are the unique ones from our own hearts and not the ones written by other people, they came from their hearts, so try saying the ones that come from your heart and pray with your whole heart remembering to be silent at times and listen to God.That is what prayer is, a loving conversation between you and God.

Remember, no-one prays to God like you do just like no-one prays to God like I do, we each have that unique relationship with Him in prayer.

God Bless you and much love and peace to you

Teresa

A prayer from the heart will get you closer than any other kind.

For a long time I prayed often “Lord, help me to love you above all things, and before all others.” It makes for a wonderful meditation on detachment, too. 🙂

Dear Scapularkid,
Sounds like God is inviting you in a special way. Offering every aspect of your life to him daily-watch like a dectective for his grace and miracles. Eucharistic Adoration and the sacraments are the ways I draw closest to Christ. Sincerely, Nanette

Do you pray a morning offering prayer each day? This is a great way to offer your whole day to God, all that you do, say, think and feel. Then you and God are partners for the whole day!

Morning Offering:
Dear Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary I offer you my day – my work, my prayers, my joys and my sufferings – for the intentions of Your Most Sacred Heart, in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world, in reparation for my sins, for the intentions of my friends and family, for our Holy Father and for (any special intention here).

I also find it helps to say small prayers throughout the day “Jesus, I trust in You,” “Lord be with me,” “Mother Mary pray for me,” etc.

You may be yearning to a deeper form of prayer.

The Catechism points out three types of Christian prayer. In order of increasing intimacy, they are: vocal, meditative, and contemplative.

Many Catholics never even heard of contemplative prayer, even though the Catechism clearly states that a prayer life “should” go further than the other two.

You might consider reading books on the apophatic traidition of the Church, such as involving mystical theology. Also, consider finding a spiritual director, who may advise you where there are prayer meetings with “deeper” prayer forms.

Many within the Catholic Church leave because they hunger for a deeper form of prayer – which is sad because she has such deeper forms. As others mentioned, God knows the intentions in your heart – the deepest forms of prayer are silent.

A great starting place to examine deeper forms of prayer is the Catechism, CCC 2697-2724.

edit – one thing to mention is that contemplative prayer – actually a divine gift although various methods are employed to “invite” it – according to the CCC is true union with Christ, in that we share in His mystery.

Silence. After your vocal prayer, learn to spend time in silence.

One thing I try to do every day is simply ask God to deepen my relationship with him. He knows how to do it much better than I ever could!

Some one on Ralph Martin’s radio show told of a not too sure “seeker” being told to pray “come and get me Lord” . I just love that.

Prayer. Silence. Adoration. Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Spiritual Reading. Listening to His Word.

But it isn’t what you want, but what HE wants for you. A deep(er) relationship with God will be given you by His Grace alone.

Any prayer you will say consistently. Also try Eucharist adoration and the rosary.

This is a prayer that said daily before prayers helped me greatly-

" Lord teach me to seek You and reveal Yourself to me when I seek You.
For I cannot seek You unless You first teach me, nor find You unless You first reveal Yourself to me.
Let me seek You in longing, and long for You in seeking.
Let me find You in love, and to love You in finding."
