Can anyone recommend a book on the Eucharist?

It is for a non-Catholic friend.

Ideally, I am looking for something historical… perhaps a survey of the early Church fathers on the issue of the real presence.

He doesn’t know much about Catholic doctrine, and is a bit afraid of it. I am hoping that discovering some very early support for the Real Presence will light a spark in him.

It doesn’t exactly fit what you want, but I’d still highly recommend “The Lamb’s Supper” by Scott Hahn.

The Lamb’s Supper by Scott Hahn, would be an excellent choice. An even easier read for a first-time introduction to Catholic teaching on the Eucharist would be Mark Shea’s This Is My Body. The Holy Father’s book on the Eucharist is magnificent, but if your friend is unfamiliar with Catholic theology then it would be way over his head as a beginning book.

The Blessed Eucharist written and approved in 1867, reprinted by TAN Books.

In the Presence of Our Lord, by Fr. Benedict Groeschel (sp?) and another man. It deals with Adoration, which may scare off your friend, I don’t know. But, the first section talks about the Real Presence and is very good.
