“What Catholics Really Believe” by Karl Keating.

That will sweep the misconceptions away, and if she’s Protestant she’s got 'em.

For a look at what the early Church believed (i.e., long before there were Protestants) I highly recommend “Four Witnesses, The Early Church in Her Own Words” by Rod Bennett.

Some that were key in my conversion:

Catholicism and Fundamentalism by Karl Keating
“The Bible Alone?” cassette series by Scott Hahn
The Salvation Controversy by Jim Akin
Early Church Writings (Penguin Classics version is dirt cheap - or they’re all online for free)
Both A Father Who Keeps His Promises by Scott Hahn and Rome Sweet Home by Scott and Kimberly Hahn. Both helped me to begin to understand the idea of Covenant and see it in light of the Catholic Church.

I personal don’t like the book approach. Most people won’t read a book that is given to them. If they buy it, then they are more apt to read it. But that begs the question - why would a evangelical buy a Catholic book?

The best approach to evangelization (which is really the issue here since only God can convert) is relational. You said it best, sit down and have a conversation.

We live in a sound byte culture, especially evangelicals. So - here’s my suggestions disguised as questions:
  • Can you effectively share in 30 seconds or less about Catholic’s belief in:
  • Jesus Christ
  • The Resurrection
  • The Bible
  • The Inerrancy of Scriptures
  • Apostolic Tradition
  • Then the Church Fathers
If you struggle with any of these - I’d recommend Curtis Martin’s book MADE FOR MORE. Let me know if you’d like a copy. It’s a great resource and guide for Catholic to better understand their faith and for evangelicals to understand our own faith. It will help give you talking points with anyone who’s not Catholic, whether they’re Christian or not!

Also, I’d highly recommend Fr. Oscar Lukefahr and all of his books. What a great collection!
