What it comes down to is we do not know if someone is in hell or not, but to say almost all athiests are in hell is not only disgusting, but false. That is my postition on the matter.

I don’t see a CCC reference here and Francis homily is not doctrine so it’s misconstrued as meaning something other than what you have quoted.

And that simply isn’t true. I think people have gone to great pains to state that not only would they themselves wish for all to be saved, but to hold out hope that any person, atheist or not, would accept the grace God will surely give them to choose His offer of salvation. Of course we hope that.
Jesus said of His return, “When the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on earth?” We know we must ‘endure to the end’. We know that we need to take up the Cross, not try to find a way to ‘get by’ without it. And we know that if God does save any of us, it is through Faith and the Catholic Church. And that since it is hard for any of us to accept God’s offer (instead of wanting everything done ‘our way’) we need to be aware of how hard it is in order that we can pray, pray, and pray some more that all will accept salvation. We can’t just presume that everybody is going to be OK, because it seems quite clear that Jesus Himself wanted to give us an incentive by noting that it was NOT a ‘guarantee’ that ANY of us would ‘endure to the end’ unless we cooperate.
