Can Bishops cure diseases?

In the Gospels and in Acts the apostles exercise their authority over demons and disease. I was wondering if Bishops, with the succesion of authority, drive out demons and cure diseases in this day and age.

This is a question i was asked by a protestant who questioned apostolic succession.

Yes, but its not only Catholics who can perform such miracles. Anyone with enough faith in Jesus can.

The Catholic Church’s practices in regard to exorcisms are fairly well documented i believe, so I would have to resoundingly answer “yes” to the first part.

As far as curing diseases, I would have to research for recorded instances of diseases being cured through a bishop (for some reason I think I recall hearing of a healing through JP2), not really sure of any specifics though.

One bishop who did so was the late and great Servant of God, John Paul II. An account of “his” miracles is given in this lovely book:

I remembering reading in high school that God cured a little boy who was paralyzed through Pope St. Pius X at a private audience.
 
I recall reading that St Dominic was once being shown the Church’s treasures in Rome. His guide commented, "No longer need Peter say, “Silver and Gold have I none.’” Acts 3:6] St Dominic replied, “Neither have I heard him say Rise up and walk lately.” [Rest of the verse]* 😉 *
 
Healing of illnesses is not a mark of apostolic succession. First of all, the fellow is working off a wrong definition.
 
People who receive the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick (which can be given by any priest or bishop, since both are successors of the Apostles to a degree) have been known to have remarkable if not miraculous cures.
 
God can perform His miracles in any way He sees fit. If it is through a Bishop then so be it. Only God performs miracles, not people…teachccd:)
 
Yes, why not? Anyone can, (God willing of course). So in essence, it is God curing the disease not the individual.
 
Miracle working isn’t isn’t related to someone’s vocation in life. The Catechism of the Catholic Church for its part explains that bishops are given the offices of sanctifying, teaching and ruling
(#1558), not such a gift from God. It is these offices that bishops receive by becoming bishops. Other abilities the Apostles had have not been passed down. No one later than the Apostles have been divinely inspired so as to write books of the Bible, for example.
 
The diseases that Bishops, or their designated exorcists, are particularly suited to curing are those caused by demonic possession or oppression.

The Apostolic Office, given at the Great Commission in Matthew 28:20 was to go “and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.”

Preaching, teaching, administering sacraments are the core of the Commission because these are essential to the life of the Church. Healing and expelling demons are not the heart of the Gospel.

Casting out demons is still regularly practiced, and every diocese has an official Exorcist, who functions under the authority of the Bishop.

Healing is a great charismatic gift, but it is not limited to Apostles, nor clergy, nor even to Catholics.
