I am a seamstress making vsetments for the Altar and I made a beautiful Navy Blue vestment, lined in gold and I was the told by priest friend that Catholic priests do not wear Navy Blue???😦

I knew I had never seen this but I was thinking maybe if one was available they would wear one for Marian days.🤷
I have made many white vestments with Marian pictures on the front etc but never solid blue.

please inform - what is the story with navy blue or any color of blue for that matter!

I am v. grateful for your time!šŸ™‚ šŸ‘

No, blue is not normally one of the valid liturgical colour in the Catholic Church.
GIRM 346. As to the color of sacred vestments, the traditional usage is to be retained: namely,
  1. White is used in the Offices and Masses during the Easter and Christmas seasons; also on celebrations of the Lord other than of his Passion, of the Blessed Virgin Mary, of the Holy Angels, and of Saints who were not Martyrs; on the Solemnities of All Saints (1 November) and of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist (24 June); and on the Feasts of Saint John the Evangelist (27 December), of the Chair of Saint Peter (22 February), and of the Conversion of Saint Paul (25 January).
  2. Red is used on Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion and on Good Friday, on Pentecost Sunday, on celebrations of the Lord’s Passion, on the feasts of the Apostles and Evangelists, and on celebrations of Martyr Saints.
  3. Green is used in the Offices and Masses of Ordinary Time.
  4. Violet or purple is used in Advent and of Lent. It may also be worn in Offices and Masses for the Dead (cf. below).
  5. Besides violet, white or black vestments may be worn at funeral services and at other Offices and Masses for the Dead in the Dioceses of the United States of America.
  6. Rose may be used, where it is the practice, on Gaudete Sunday (Third Sunday of Advent) and on Laetare Sunday (Fourth Sunday of Lent).
  7. On more solemn days, sacred vestments may be used that are festive, that is, more precious, even if not of the color of the day.
  8. Gold or silver colored vestments may be worn on more solemn occasions in the dioceses of the United States of America.
That said, some countries have an indult to use blue on Marian feasts but in those cases it wouldn’t be navy blue which would look too penitential or funereal.

There are a number of colors that priests wear at Mass depending on the day based on the liturgical calendar, but blue is not one of them. If you ever get a liturgical Gregorian calendar, you can look at any day of the year and see what color the priest will be wearing at Mass.

-Green is for Ordinary Time.

-Red is for feast days of martyrs or certain days honoring Jesus (Palm Sunday, Good Friday).

-White is for days honoring Mary (Ascension, Annunciation) and certain saints and also used on Christmas. It’s also used for days honoring the divinity of Jesus and the Holy Trinity.

-Purple is for Lent and three weeks of Advent.

-Rose is for the third week of Advent.

My understanding is that blue may only be used for Marian feasts by the few dioceses in Spain and Marian shrines that have special permission to use them, but the ones I have seen are more of a royal blue than a true navy.

Blue is also used for Marian feasts in several of the Eastern Catholic Churches. I’ve seen both Royal Blue and Skye used.

It used to be widely used in the Roman Church, specifically throughout the Gallican ā€œRiteā€ā€¦ France, Spain, the Low Countries.

But at present, no, it’s rarely used in the Roman Church.

I am very grateful to you all for responding!:tiphat:
I am aware of the litigurical colors but was just thinking/:hmmm: hoping there was on occasion they COULD wear NAVY BLUE since I have already made this beautiful piece.:doh2:

fyi - I am taking it to the seminary close to my house and will just see if anyone would want to wear this on one of those more special Marian days:bowdown:

As mentioned above, the Catholic Church uses violet vestments during most of Advent and Lent. Per this article on EWTN.com, ā€œ(s)ome liturgists, particularly in the Episcopalian Church, have introduced the use of blue vestments during Advent as a way of distinguishing this season from Lent; however, no approval for blue vestments has been given for the Catholic Church.ā€ I do know that there are also some Lutheran pastors who will wear blue vestments during Advent, and (as noted above) Eastern Catholic (and Orthodox) will wear blue vestments for Marian feasts.

I know it’s not what you had in mind, but if you can’t find a Catholic home for your blue vestment, perhaps there’s a nearby Orthodox or Episcopalian or Lutheran parish who could use it?
