Can Catholics believe in civil partnerships? I am confused because Archbishop Vincent Nichols, Diocese of Westminster clearly implies to me it seems that we can, as long as we don’t believe in gay marriage? youtube.com/watch?v=mymOTA9pJ1w

What is the truth of the matter?

No that’s not it.

The Archbishop was trying to point out that *Catholic Social Teaching *revolves mostly around poverty and education… Which it actually does.

The other commentators tried to diminish the Churches reputation by falsely claiming that the Church revolves around homosexual matters as one of its core issues, and that since atheism is on the rise, that the Church has backed off because the Pope “knows what he can get away with and what he cannot”.

The whole debate was a crock.

If the other commentators actually knew what Catholic Social Teaching was based on, they would not have been attacking the Church…

It would have helped them to have had even an ounce of understanding on the topic at hand… They were completely unprepared and looked foolish.

Heres Catholic Social Teaching.

I see what you mean about the other guests on the show…But what about what the Archbishop’s comment, that there can be a ‘case for civil partnerships’?

He was referring to a case for ‘civil partnerships’ in English law. Very specific. However, this video was clearly labeled ‘gay civil partnerships.’ Without knowing precisely what English law says about the issue of any sort of ‘civil partnership,’ I think that nothing else can be said.

Peace,
Ed

Well what do you think of THIS?

I have no problem with gay marriages. It is a persons choice, not mine.

But aside from that, it will be legalized someday everywhere, so start getting used to the idea.

Your profile states you are a Christian. How is then that you do not know that God forbids homosexuality?
I have wondered about that too. It seems he does not know what Christianity is all about.

The guy on the link that he gave pretends to be an expert on the Bible saying that the NT has done away with OT but seems to be unaware of the existence of a certain letter by a certain Paul to to a certain people called the Romans.

Hold up guys, first off I’m not a guy.

Second off, I never said I agree with homosexuality. I know it is wrong, but its also not my business if somebody chooses to participate in it. It really has nothing to do with me.

Also too, just because I’m a Christian doesn’t mean that don’t think people should have free will.

So did you guys even watch the video or the videos by him? If you haven’t then don’t be refuting him if you have not seen his videos. Thanks.

So its not your business if somebody else participates in homosexuality? That’s okay?
How about if somebody else participates participates in abortion? That’s okay?
How about if somebody participates in a break-in to your home and attacks a family member? That’s okay?

The same could be said about abortion but Christians stand outside of abortion clinics and pray for its end.

Sure, everyone has free will but we must use our free will to choose correctly.

The ‘it has nothing to do with me’ argument does affect the society in which we live. Porn? Has nothing to do with me. Fornication in movies? Has nothing to do with me.

God will bless those who acknowledge Him. And God will bless the nation who acknowledges Him.

Ed

This is why I hate getting in debates about this because somebody always compares it to some other situation when you are harming another person.

Attacking somebody is PHYSICALLY HARMING THEM. it is not consensual.

A homosexual relationship between two adults is not physically hurting anyone and it is consenting.

There is a difference. You are out of your mind for comparing somebody getting attacked and murder to a homosexual relationship.

I suppose then it doesn’t really matter whether one lives in a moral society, or not? I suppose it doesn’t matter that when our children and grandchildren grow up they will think homosexual unions are the norm? Just as many things once held sacred in our society, marriage between a man and a woman will be something that will be mentioned as an idiosyncracy of a forgotten past? And that is okay with you?

The commandment, "Thou shall not kill’ is not speaking of only physical killing. It also means that anything, physically OR spiritualy OR morally that lessens, kills/negates, our closeness to God is just as deadly and just as sinful as a physical killing.

You can believe in them. You have free will, but you will deaden your soul and your love of God if you tolerate them.

You might question the state of my mind but it was God who said both murder (among many violent crimes) and homosexuality are grave sins and unrepented at death both mean eternal damnation in Hell.

Id watch what you say. There are homosexuals on this board and probably would definitely not appreciate what you are saying. I know some homosexuals and they did not choose it. Thats for certain, and if being in love with somebody makes them happy, they will do, it and they have that right. I am so sick of these homosexual debates. It is incredibly disgusting that you do not understand the pain they go through because of people like YOU who are intolerant of others lifestyles when its not even hurting you. It is NOT your business. Now, I don’t necessarily agree with homosexuality. I am not gay, so I would not understand what it’s like, but if they feel the same way I do about guys with their own gender, then I do understand how they feel. It doesn’t matter though, homosexuality is one of the least threatening things ever. The population of homosexuals is under 10% in america. You do not have to worry about humans becoming extinct or whatever you think is going to happen.

Doesn’t matter anyways, they deserve equal rights just like you and me, and they will get them. I bet my life on it, give it time, and they will be.

You keep dodging the question. Let me put it in a clearer way.
You are a Christian (you don’t say which denomination, but anyway).
As a Christian do you believe that a homosexual who dies unrepentent of his homosexual acts goes to Hell?

Can Catholics believe in civil partnerships?
Instead of using the word ‘believe’ it would been better to use the word ‘support’. Civil partnerships clearly exist, so asking someone if they believe in them is patently obvious. Whether they support such unions, however, is another matter. Among people who identify as Catholics, you will find people on both sides of this issue.

I have stopped thinking of who will and won’t go to hell. I have come to the understanding that it’s not my place to decide. I can try to help a person but I will never say " you’re going to hell ". Its unbelievably rude, and I just won’t do it. Its not my judgement, its God’s and thats how its going to stay for me. I don’t apologize for that either.

God definitely says in leviticus 18:22 that homosexual acts are detestable. That should be enough to know it is wrong. But the rest, is not my decision. A homosexual person is not my life to live. I’m not gay, so I do not understand what they go through, but I can try to understand. either way, it is not my life to live. Every homosexual knows what the bible has to say about it. I can guarantee you that.

It is clearly and unambiguously stated in the New testament that homosexuals will NOT be saved. Are you saying God’s word is wrong?

1 Cor 6:9-10

9 Do you not know that the unjust will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators nor idolaters nor adulterers nor boy prostitutes nor sodomites
10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God.
