Can Catholics cheer for Tim Tebow

You can root for Tim Tebow. His religion has no bearing on his status as a football player or anyone’s legitimacy for rooting for him.
I agree. I really like him as a person, I like how he is not afraid of showing his faith. I still think he will fail as a NFL quarterback, as I do not believe a running quarterback can be successful in the NFL. He is a great athlete, but he does not have a good arm. He could have played any skill position in the NFL successfully, except QB IMO.

There was one quote from him I read today in the WSJ, it said something to the effect “God does not care who wins, its just a game”. Really sad to hear him deny or express such a big misunderstanding of God’s omnipotence. God cares about every hair on our head, every bird in the sky. Of course God cares about who wins any game. He cares about everything that goes on in our lives.

Obviously, he does pray during games, so he clearly believes that the playing field is a place where the work of Providence should be welcomed and recognized. It is a place where God operates in the lives of people. He’s not saying God is not impotent or that God ever takes his eyes off his beloved.

His point is that there are prayers rising to Heaven from both sidelines, and that a win should not be taken as a sign of God’s particular favor. He’s winning now, but he’s not going to feel God has abandoned him if he loses. That reflects the outcome of a game. God is interested in the outcome of souls. Tim Tebow tries to play so that his relationship with God and his fellow man is strengthened, no matter what the score board shows at the end. That’s what he wants young players to take from how his faith operates on his play.

Obviously many missing the point, is Tebow a threat to the Catholic faith?

Only if you make him out to be. Seriously people-he’s a FOOTBALL PLAYER. In the long run of things, it doesn’t matter what he says or does.

I think people are blowing this way out of proportion by bashing him, but calling him a threat to the Catholic faith is getting to the point of lunacy.

From everything I know of Tim Tebow he has made it very clear that Jesus Christ is #1 in his life…not a church or religion. Why would any Christian feel that outlook would be threatening? That is, unless they don’t feel the same way.

Simply making Christ #1 is not compatible with the RCIA.

:confused::confused::confused:

How would a Christian football player be a threat to the Catholic faith?

I think Nancy Pelosi is much more of a threat to the Catholic faith, by claiming to be a Catholic and receiving the Eucharist while working to legalize homosexual marriage and keep abortion legal.

As far as Pelosi agreed. What doesn’t the RC address those that openly promote homosexuality and abortion by Catholics that as well make these stances public.

Good question. That confuses me at times. Sometimes I’m not sure who is supposed to be #1: Jesus or the Pope? From growing up in the Church, I was told that we put Jesus 1st by putting the Pope first… which makes some sense, but also sounds like our priorities are mixed up a bit.

The Holy Father is the Vicar of Christ. He doesn’t supercede Christ.

Here’s my simplistic take on Tim Tebow via my 13 year old son:

My son said that every time he sees someone “Tebowing” it reminds him to say a little for the unborn because of the television ad Tim and his mother made.

That’s a good thing.

That’s really excellent. I’m glad you posted this because I will remember to pray everytime I see Tebowing.

My fear is that Mr. Tebow is probably under severe attack from Satan, because I’m sure Satan does not like it at all when a mere man helps people remember to pray.

So I’m guessing that Satan has a strategy for making Mr. Tebow fall from grace and cause all his fans and foes to become disillusioned with him and with Christianity.

I’m guessing that Mr. Tebow is often confronted with temptations, e.g., beautiful women who want him in the wrong way, opportunities to be involved with mobsters or other criminals, drugs, alcohol, materialism, taking chances with his life (e.g., speeding in a fast car), pride, obsession with physical appearance, etc.

If he yields to any of these temptation, AND if he is caught doing so, which he will be in this day and age when every “star” is constantly monitored by media, paparazzi, and fans, then it will be a sad thing. We expect way too much of our “Christian” celebs. I don’t know how they take the pressure to be “perfect” all the time. The Pope has the support of the entire Vatican to help keep him from saying or doing something “bad.” But football players are surrounded constantly by worldly influences, sinful environments, and excess–it’s tough to stay on the right track.

In so far as abortion, Tim Tebow has a better track record than most cafeteria Catholics. Tell your son I enjoyed his thought provoking answer.

Tebow time!!! It looked like the Bears had that game put away, but I suppose God had other plans. If the Broncos beat the Pats next week we will really know something miraculous is going on.

Whatever form of Christianity he believes in, we all need some.

God Bless. praise the Savior.

I think “tebowing” needs a secondary definition, besides the posture: “gaining a victory in nearly impossible circumstances at the last possible moment.”

We could all use some of his work ethic and sincerity.

The first thing that the man does after winning or losing a game is give witness to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I love seeing someone who is so openly Christian succeed, especially when he has so many haters.

What are the odds? Tebow has won half of his games in improbably over time victories. You would figure that things would not go his way at least some of the time.
