Can Catholics participate in Halloween?

If people are going to take Halloween fun away from little kids, I think Valentine’s Day romance should be scraped for adults. 😃 I think children should be taught the real meaning of the days and then let them enjoy them in whichever way they choose. Personally, I don’t celebrate either one.

I don’t think adults who dress up as “the devil,” etc. are necessarily praising the devil or worshipping him. I think they are just secular people looking for some secular fun.

They are glorifying the devil ( evil) without even realizing it. More people should think about what message they are giving in the things they are spending so much time & money on.

I respect you opinion, though I don’t share it. I don’t see them glorifying the devil because he is seen, even in Halloween costumes, as someone evil and scary and someone a person wants to avoid.

Maybe for very young kids, but once they are teens and adults, dressing up as a devil is considered cool or even sexy when women do it.

I still don’t think that constitutes worship of the devil. Those who do worship the devil don’t need a costume, and they are risking eternal damnation by doing so. (But I don’t believe a Halloween costume caused anyone to worship the devil.)

Whatever, I do not condone worshipping the devil in way, shape, or form.
 
Nothing wrong in dressing up in fun costumes. Probably not a good idea to dress as the devil (as to trivialize it) or to dress in extremely slutty costumes. But dressing your kid up in a Mario costume and getting some candy…many carving a silly pumpkin…I see no harm in that personally. It’s my favorite holiday of the year next to thanks giving

Ive noticed a rise in gory, violent costumes over the last X number of years. Mostly the boys.

I really like that you took time to make the theme about All Saints Day (in this case, eve)… it’s inspiring & I am willing to try it this ‘Halloween’. It’s sad to know that the majority do the same holidays over & over thru the years w/out most realizing what they’re actually doing. This may open eyes & wake up some people, but I’d rather stand up for the Saints than do what everyone else is doing, whether what they’re doing is right or not. Thanks for sharing your experience & (name removed by moderator)ut!!

I have been a senior citizen a long time, and one year I decided to do my swan song in giving out treats as my doorbell rang frequently, and my dog barked relentlessly.

I made a poster in big letters and wrote on it “Happy All Saints Eve”. Then I opened the front window slightly and put my CD player there and it played hymns. I also placed any saint statues I had outside, and the house light by my front door shone on them.

I had a basket of lollipops and a bunch of scripture verse cards, and as the children came to my door I asked them their first name, then called them by name and handed them a scripture card and a lollipop.

Some parents looked puzzled, taking everything in…I live in the Bible belt.

One little boy commented to me that he didn’t like the house he had just passed (the owners had gone all out to make it a horror spectacle, with eerie sounds playing, arms sticking out of the ground, and other representations of horror.) I liked hearing what that child had to say. 🙂

Thank you for the affirmation.

Another thing to add to that…My children were in public school and were told they could come in costume on Halloween. So, one of my daughters came all in blue, as our Blessed Mother. My young son came as St. Michael and Archangel, with a cardboard sword (the sword is the Word of God). My youngest daughter came as St. Therese of Lisieux holding plastic red roses.

As a result of the St. Therese costume, I had a great conversation with her Kindergarten teacher!

I’m surprised she didn’t call the cops because of the sword! 😉
 
Soooo based on these answers, I can dress up and go trick or treating as long as I don’t “glorify demonic activity.” (which I assume to be dressing like a devil and whatnot, right?)

I’m thinking of dressing up as a dead nun (who’d most likely be a saint) – the habit + bottom-half of my face as a skull. Is this ok?

Do whatever makes you happy…then let the Lord know why.
