Can Catholics participate in yoga?

Which people is that?

I’m saying that even “the nuts that hate us” are aware that the Church doesn’t endorse yoga 100%, to Catholics. But some/many Catholics don’t know this.

Here are a few more links, courtesy of Google:

And the one again about Pope Benedit on Harry Potter, which I didn’t know until searching on it as a result of this conversation.

Perhaps you should read through the earlier threads on what you have referred to?
With respect, it is things like this that make outsiders think the Church is about superstition etc.

There are 14 pages. Could you tell me what you mean?

Which people is that?
People like you who apparently have been infested by fundamentalist mind-disease.

In other words… the nuts that hate us believe the same thing as you and it is good reason for us to start jumping on your bandwagon? Are you trying to make an argument or do you also suffer from parrot-itis?

Jimmy Akin says hi.

Oh yes and while you’re reading that, a Msgr. Fleetwood gives his regards as well.
Too kind? I thought it was over-kill after I thought about it*. I couldn’t do it anyway; I know I couldn’t deal with the guilt. I know one mustn’t abuse ones’s gifts. Much.

*Or maybe not. She refers to Childcraft books as witchcraft, too. :banghead:
Over-kill? Memory loss? No, you’re too kind really. That is not overkill. This is overkill.

But yeah you’re right. Maybe the reason why God’s holding back on giving folks like me magic powers is He wants to put it in the same package as my soulmate (who’d be the only person capable of putting out the short fuse to my draconic rage mode).

P.S.
Oddly enough, I have those books too. 😛

Ummm … well, isn’t Harry Potter a wizard and his lady friend a witch? So your friend is right. Just because they don’t summon spirits using the Lesser Key Of Solomon doesn’t mean the content is harmless. It normalises magic (or magick) and makes it seem attractive. Witches and wizards are protrayed as rebellious heroes living in an exciting world, while ordinary mortals live in a boring one.
Fantasy Magic =/= Real Occult

Fantasy doesn’t normalize magic. It turns it into something unrecognizable from the real thing.

And by the way, am I to understand you are yet another person who gives reality too much entertainment credit? Where does it say in the CCC that it’s a mortal sin to call ordinary mortal life boring?

I’ll tell you now, you take me out of my fantasy (be it from reading books, playing games, or watching something on the screen) and I will not hesitate to say my ordinary life IS boring. Good God it’s already 2012 and still the only exciting things I ever do in my real life are drawn from my attempts to escape it. Don’t give me talk about going out and enjoying the ‘beauty of God’s creation’ because I’ve experienced enough of it that I can make it look a lot less interesting/exciting than a sack of potatoes.

People like you who apparently have been infested by fundamentalist mind-disease.
Exactly. No fun and no mental. This attitude comes from the fear of anything intellectual or art that is anything besides sentimental.
(…)

Oh, see, I would keep that in mind for something else. It’s about perspective.

Not to get all Dumbledore on you, but something about words being the most inexhaustible source of magic. Or something.
P.S.
Oddly enough, I have those books too. 😛

the Church doesn’t endorse yoga 100%, to Catholics
The Church doesn’t have time to enumerate every single appropriate activity, book, film, etc. The fact that the Church has not condemned Yoga should be sufficient, but no, the crazy parade just keeps on floating by.

Anyway, the Vatican exorcist’s opinion is not binding, nor do I have any reason to assign it greater weight given that it comes with zero reasoning, so whatever.

Perhaps a more informative approach – what happens to Catholic yoga practitioners? Does their Eagle turn Satanic as the Devil suddenly overcomes them? Sometimes I think that this kind of irrational superstition is exactly with the Evil One wants…:doh2:

It is fantasy. Sometimes I wish I could wave a/my magic wand and wish donkey ears on some. What about ‘superheroes’? They have special powers and I know I would love to have some of them. I know it is all fiction and fantasy and I have to live my boring me.

I might try to answer this when I recover from “his lady friend”.

Okay, still not fully recovered but I will soldier on.

The witches and wizards go to school and have homework. Sounds like life. They get to some misadventures, even go looking for it. I did that, with my friends. I don’t wouldn’t try some of that now because, while I managed not to get caught then, I don’t want to try explaining myself to other professionals (cops) that I do deal with regularly. “Good evening, Officer M…Oh just out walking and took a shortcut over the railroad bridge over the river…it’s illegal?..Oops…okay, thanks for the warning…see you at the ____ meeting next week” (if they only knew) ;).

HP and almost everybody are in peril from an evil maniac and bunch of racists. I would like your definition of exciting. I might not be in peril from that but I will speak up when people try to spread untruths about my faith or certain forms of art. Not exactly heroic but I never said I was a Gryffindor.

And the witch/wizard and school of witchcraft thing? All that means is that they are a bunch of magic nerds going to the magnet school for magic.

Agreed. This is also what keeps some away from the Church as a body all about superstition and mumbo jumbo.

I also wonder about an 86 year old man, even a priest , going around saying he had been the chief exorcist of the Church etc. In the distant past, mental illness was thought to be demonic possession.

Re the thread title, in case no one mentioned it:

The Sanskrit word yoga has the literal meaning of “yoke”, from a root yuj meaning to join, to unite, or to attach.

Matthew 11:13 “For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

There is so much unnecessary and pious animosity on here about Eastern Teachings that many clearly do not see the actual relationship between the root of Catholicism and of other Teachings. That is sad, and I agree with Mariosang and Ebonykawai

Quote from Jimmy Akin:
Now, before we go any further, let me issue THE BIG RED DISCLAIMER: I am not a fan of the Harry Potter novels. In order to be able to comment apologetically on the Harry Potter phenomenon, I read the first novel and watched the first two movies. I was not at all impressed with them as literature, and I recognize that they can have a harmful spiritual effect on some readers, especially among the young. I also recognize that they are not an apologia for paganism and that a reader who is secure in his faith will not be magically turned into a neo-pagan by reading them.
[My underline, above]
jimmyakin.org/2005/07/pre16_on_harry_.html

So if you are secure in your faith, you can read these books. Leaving aside all the people who have no faith to defend themselves against demonic attack or their own evil impulses, how many Catholics know their faith today?
The monsignor, now an official of the Council of European Bishops’ Conferences, said the primary focus of parents and teachers he has spoken with about the books is how enthusiastic children are about reading them.
On a moral level, he said, the books “pit good against evil, and good always wins.”
“The people who complain about Harry Potter are the same people who complain about priests, bishops and catechists watering down church teaching about the devil and evil,” he said.
In J.K. Rowling’s books, he said, “Harry is the only one not afraid to name Voldemort – whom the others all refer to as ‘He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.’ Because he names evil, he is not afraid of it,” but can confront it.
Msgr. Fleetwood said the most appropriate way to judge Harry Potter is not on the basis of theology, but according to the criteria of children’s literature and whether children will read the books willingly.
catholicnews.com/data/stories/cns/0504069.htm

So, the important thing is that children will read these books? That’s sad.

Yes, I would say, people are complaining about the lack of emphasis on teaching people about how easy it is to go to Hell. Vatican II seems to have banished the Devil forever. Quite a feat.

Here’s a idea for you. The angels of Hell aren’t going to appear to you with horns and offer you temptation direct. They won’t shout in your ear to commit sin. They just work on your evil, prideful tendencies and try to magnify them.

You may not realise anything is wrong until, by the grace of God, you realise you are doing things which would make your grandparents ashamed or which your childhood self would find horrid.

We are surrounded by stimuli of all kinds. Modern culture is full of sex, pride and violence. Are you going to let these sense impressions nestle, as memory, in your subconscious? Do you really think you are the master of your heart? Even modern psychiatrists say no.

Fr. Gabriele Amorth is an important exorcist.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabriele_Amorth

He is not a crank. The problem for exorcists today is to do their job when a large section of the Church simple doesn’t believe in the Devil any more. It is not united on this issue, which is still a fact of doctrine, as far as I know.

Ha, it’s kind of funny that occultists believe in demons and try to use them but sections of the Church don’t think there’s a need to evict them from Her suffering children.

So you have an issue with the Vatican and with Vatican II too of course, on this issue. It would appear that you came up with your own views on HP and then say all who disagree are wrong. Then

Here’s a idea for you. The angels of Hell aren’t going to appear to you with horns and offer you temptation direct. They won’t shout in your ear to commit sin. They just work on your evil, prideful tendencies and try to magnify them.

PLease say what all this has to do with HP?

I would like to know please what the Vatican says about Father Morth and what he says. Wiki just quotes what he appaently said in interviews.

I agree. The Church is the universal church, not the Church from the West and of and for the West only.

Has no one here ever read St. Teresa of Avila or St. John of the Cross?? They speak of the same kinds of methods of cleansing the body, mind and spirit that yoga speaks of. The 8 limbs of yoga, as well as St. Teresa’s and St. John’s writings, are methods to help the seeker receive any gift of God that He sees fit to bestow. Mysticism is a great gift from God, but one that most people feel is only for saints. It is not.
.
It is probable that St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross are “rolling over in their graves” to be put into the same class of mysticism as a yogi. There is a HUGE difference between the mysticism that evolves from a desire to connect with the Triune God of Christianity and the pagan beliefs fostered by Buddhism, Hinduism, Shintoism, Siekism, or any other “ism” outside of Catholicism! Please respect those who are trying here in this thread to defend the Truth. Do not think that by diluting the mysticism of such profound individuals with unholy non-Christian practices will enhance in any way one’s relationship with humanity’s Savior, Jesus Christ.

I can feel your eyes rolling into the back of your head and relegating this post into the category of “ignoramus”. That is called intellectual pride, something that our loving Pope warned us of on Christmas. Why not thoroughly delve into the spirituality of those two great Catholic saints and join the Y for classes in stretching? I know, because Yoga is popular and it sounds good when you tell people that you have to go to your Yoga class rather than telling them that you have to go to a stretching class. “Doing” Yoga is means to express the facade of “college educated upper-middle class”. As Catholics, we are called to seek conversion. I would suggest that anyone spending time and energy going to a yoga class spend that time and energy delving into Catholic mysticism and schedule regular visits to Perpetual Adoration Chapels or daily Mass where the main “posture” is on your knees.

I agree. The Church is the universal church, not the Church from the West and of and for the West only.
Actually, the Church is the Bride of Jesus Christ…not a compilation of various bits and pieces of pagan religions.

They just work on your evil, prideful tendencies and try to magnify them.
Correct.
Fr. Gabriele Amorth is an important exorcist.
No doubt. Yet his opinion is still that. And not binding.

Furthermore, your appeal to him is a fallacious argument. His authority is as an exorcist, not as a literary critic. No one, including he, has claimed that Harry Potter is directly dabbling in the occult, which it is not. His purview therefore does not extend to Harry Potter. Using him as a source is not compelling for that reason.
Doing" Yoga is means to express the facade of “college educated upper-middle class”.
You have no possible way of knowing each person’s motives. Some people may just like yoga.
I would suggest that anyone spending time and energy going to a yoga class spend that time and energy delving into Catholic mysticism and schedule regular visits to Perpetual Adoration Chapels or daily Mass where the main “posture” is on your knees.
First, the two are not mutually exclusive. Second, prayer is not physically active.

So if you are secure in your faith, you can read these books. Leaving aside all the people who have no faith to defend themselves against demonic attack or their own evil impulses, how many Catholics know their faith today?
Fun fact when distinguishing reality from fantasy: Securing basic knowledge of science and common sense is actually more than enough.

I should know. I used those as a child before I even heard of Catholic apologists.
So, the important thing is that children will read these books? That’s sad.
What’s sad is that you’ve clearly missed the point.
Yes, I would say, people are complaining about the lack of emphasis on teaching people about how easy it is to go to Hell. Vatican II seems to have banished the Devil forever. Quite a feat.
Yeah sure, throw in some slur against Vatican II. That’ll help your case.
Here’s a idea for you. The angels of Hell aren’t going to appear to you with horns and offer you temptation direct. They won’t shout in your ear to commit sin. They just work on your evil, prideful tendencies and try to magnify them.
Indeed so now that we’ve established that, you should realize the obvious fact that what you’re describing is not what the ‘witchcraft and magic’ of fictional works like Harry Potter actually depict.
You may not realise anything is wrong until, by the grace of God, you realise you are doing things which would make your grandparents ashamed or which your childhood self would find horrid.
Wow, didn’t know you met my grandparents.

Frankly the worse they’ve ever done is scratch their hands and wonder why I’m still into magic (and cartoons). They figure I’d grow up more into playing guitar, riding motorcycles, and all other manly things. 😛

By the way, how does your rambling even address that which you’re quoting (or even Harry Potter for that matter)?
Ha, it’s kind of funny that occultists believe in demons and try to use them but sections of the Church don’t think there’s a need to evict them from Her suffering children.
If you can find me an occultist who can summon a living, breathing army of winged archfiends bearing spiky pitchforks, then I might just show a little more concern.

I’m a pretty sane person although I’m sure after reading my post some of you will think I’m in la la land…

I started doing Reike and felt a lot of peace, everything seemed brighter, at Mass I felt like I was attending it for the first time, the words seemed to hold greater meaning and understanding, It became more than what had become a Sunday rituaI where I had got into a habit of reciting ‘my lines’ at the appropriate time…I felt Bliss…

I then got involved with other ‘healing Modalities’ believing them to be benevolent… Unfortunately while doing a course on Healing touch I ended up doing a ‘clearing on a lady’ I just felt she needed light and asked that the light of the Holy Spirit enter her …She started coughing and coughing… When it was her turn to work on me I felt ‘fear’ didn’t understand why, I didn’t think to ask Archangel Michael for protection…
At the end of the course when the facilitator said that although she was a nurse so for her she does it from a practitioner point some like to draw on ‘Spirit’ ‘Mother Earth’ ‘Source’ God… The girl that I had been with said She was a Wicca and witch… I spent over 4 years trying to clear the gunk that had attached itself to me… I couldn’t pray, couldn’t go to Church… When I finally got the strength to fight back I still couldn’t go near a church, a year later I felt there was only one attachment left… I started to try and pray the Rosary… Everytime I started I came over with complete fatigue would yawn like crazy one after the other and have to stop… months went by and little by little I could complete a prayer… Enough that one day I went to Church and bawled my eyes out… The Priest prayed and annointed me, on the drive home I coughed up some weird froth & bile…

I am saying this because, anything that you do that is not in a Church setting where you are emptying your mind you are allowing the sources of Evil a space to enter… I think you have to be armed with knowledge and ask for protection before any session…
