I was wondering if anyone here is familiar with (RED). It’s a charitable organization started by Bono and Bobby Shriver and it is dedicated to treating AIDS, and I believe a lot of musicians are involved. Yesterday at the Super Bowl there was a commercial stating that there was a free download of a new U2 song, and for each download Bank of America would donate money to (RED). I’ve wondered about this organization for a while, and I’m a big U2 fan. I just want to make sure this organization doesn’t support abortion or birth control. According to their website, they seem to treat AIDS in people who have contracted it, as opposed to preventing birth. I was just wondering if anyone knew if they in fact support birth-control as well.

Did some research, couldn’t find anything about birth control or abortion. It looks fine!

VeritasLuxMea, thank you very much. Yes, I just wanted to make sure that their definition of preventing the transmission of AIDS from mother to baby didn’t include preventing there being a baby in the first place! You never know these days with all this “code language” that these kinds of organizations sometimes use.

Well I’m not sure about this particular organization, but AIDS awareness and research is, I think, a great cause! And if there are in fact no darker motives, very worthy of support 👍

The point of (RED) is for the partner company to contribute money to the Global Fund by sharing a portion of its profit to help people affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa.
Sounds like charity for profit to me.

I’m not totally sure what you mean by that, but it sounds a bit like you don’t like it.

The charity itself does not make profits other than in the way any other charity might produce a line of items that it then sells and devotes the profits to its stated charitable cause rather than paying shareholders or owners… It does also partner with other companies who designate some products as (RED) products - frequently made in a red colour as well. I own (RED) iPod, for example - and the charity got the profits made from that particular product line.

As quoted from their website, a ‘portion’ of the profit goes to the charity. Maybe, I’m too cynical, but I would find it hard to believe that the charity’s ‘portion’ is even close to the profit the company makes.

RED itself only raises money. They give it all to the Global Fund. A quick review of the Global Fund website shows that in the area of HIV, they have purchased and given away 4.2 billion condoms.

So, they do not advocate abstinence based programs.

Niche marketing. The liar is clever.

There are a lot of watch dog groups that monitor charities.
Best to check them out.

Or better yet, and more responsible, determine what you have for charity, select one or two that you trust and only give to those. There will usually be some modest “impulse” charity. Giving to charities, un-vetted, could be wasteful and irresponsible.

That advice came from a professional financial advisor.

.
Ack. Thus confirming my suspicion that there are zero Catholic-safe charities besides the Church itself and various pro-life groups.

Can’t donate to any of this type, because there’s always BC to worry about. Can’t donate to medical research because all medical innovation apparently uses stem cells nowadays.

What a bummer!

They don’t have to advocate abstinence per se to be in the clear. The stuff they were discussing on the (RED) site itself involved treatments that did not address actual sex acts.

Shoot, I downloaded the free song after the first response on this thread. 😦 Oh well, I guess I couldn’t have known. I should’ve waited longer…

I’m just glad it’s promoting HIV awareness and treatment, really. We’ve come to that point in history where HIV/AIDS could be eradicated in our lifetime, methinks, all because of awareness companies like that.
