It is my understanding of Church teaching that one is never supposed to target civilians even if it can help bring victory in a just war. However, many people believe that two famous incidents in World War II, namely the firebombing of Dresden and the dropping of the atom bombs, were legitimate because of the serious impact they had in shortening the war or because one could loosely define miltary targets as including spots in these cities.
Are there any statements by the pope or the magisterium which specifically address the firebombing of Dresden or the dropping of the atomic bombs in WWII? Thank you for your help.
