Can contraceptives be used to prevent spreading disease?

I’m just curious - these are not practical, applicable questions for me, just thoughts which arose.

In a previous show, I heard it said that NFP is allowed because, if God wants a baby to result, it will. Most contraceptives have a chance of failure, albeit slight - so it seems as though that would make them accepted.

But my question primarily is this:
If a married couple uses contraceptives not to prevent children but to prevent spreading disease to the spouse, wouldn’t that be considered acceptable use?
