Can each scapular be worn for the same purpose? And how do I enroll?

There are many scapulars. I was always drawn to the crusader scapular. I would alternate that one and a standard one.
However, I recently purchased a Sorrowful Mother scapular. “the Black Scapular of the Seven Dolors of Mary”. I have become extremely drawn to it. But the only time I wear it is when I pray the rosary of the seven sorrows.
I know some scapulars are for specifics. Does anyone know the specifics to wearing this one? And can I wear this scapular the same as I would a standard scapular for the same purpose?
I know there is a five-fold scapular, but it’s a little too much.
I can’t help it. For some reason I’m just so drawn to the black one.

Also, Ive read someonething about being blessed by a priest to be enrolled? Can someone give me some info on that?

You may also contact the Servites through their Website. There is a 7 Sorrow Rosary and a Secular order too.

You wear a scapular according to which spirituality draws you. One would wear a brown scapular as part of one’s participation, as much as one is able or willing, in Carmelite spirituality. You would go black (Dolors) if you have an affinity for the Servites’ spirituality. You’d go for the other black (Passion) if you’re into Passionist spirituality.

If you’re drawn to the black scapular of the Seven Sorrows, you may want to discern why that is so, and perhaps do so with the guidance of a pastor or spiritual director. It is probably a question worth exploring.

I don’t think it’s anything abnormal. It’s positive rather than negative. To honor her suffering the same way we do for Jesus. Usually I don’t question what I feel, I just go with it. I have a strong devotion to Mary. I read that her fav title is “Our Lady of Sorrows”.

I know that different scapulars are worn for different purposes and devotion. I ask, if any, or this one, can be worn the same as the brown one. With the same promise.

I have no idea what you mean by the “crusader scapular”.

There are some 18 scapulars approved for the devotional use of the faithful. Each has its own distinct origin. The Carmelite scapular, the tradition goes, was entrusted to Saint Simon Stock and represented a change in the habit of the Carmelites as they passed from being hermits in the Holy Land to mendicants who had re-settled in Europe because of the actual situation in Palestine in the 13th century.

The scapular of Our Lady of Dolors, on the other hand, was a gift of the Blessed Virgi to the Servite Order.

Either or both may be worn devotionally in honour of the Mother of Jesus.

Either or both may be commuted to wearing the Scapular medal, which would need to be blessed for that purpose once one has had investiture.

The rite for blessing and investiture is contained in The Book of Blessings and may today be done by any priest or deacon.

The Servites have an archconfraternity as well as a secular order and information about either or both may be had by contacting them. The address for the Americans is servite.org/

Sorry, I did not mean to imply that somehow being drawn to the scapular of the Dolors is somehow negative or abnormal. I meant it more as why you are drawn to the Servite spirituality as a spirituality versus some other. That is to say, explore it a bit more because it could be a prompting to a deeper spiritual life. The Servite spirituality is revered in the the Church.

I wouldn’t concern myself about alleged promises. Scapulars are about associations with their mother Orders and are a sign of the sharing of spiritual goods. All I mean is explore the Servite spirituality and if you think it’s for you, enroll in its confraternity and wear its scapular.

I wear the brown scapular not because of some promise but because I wish to share some part of the Carmelites’ spiritual goods, practice some part of their spirituality and entrust myself to our blessed Mother’s care as the Carmelites do.

I agree with you 100%. Most that I know(including myself) get the brown scapular blessed and wear it for it’s promise, protection, devotion and the reasons you mentioned even if we don’t do or know of the “proper” devotion. I admire your devotion, and it’s something I would like to dive into more.

However, I do “concern” myself with “alleged” and “some promise”. I believe it. I have faith in it. I have faith in it’s purpose. I have faith in any gifts and blessing Our Lord and our Mother give to us.

There is a crusader scapular. It’s a brown scapular with the crusader cross on it. Google it. There isn’t any special devotion. It’s the same as wearing a brown scapular.

Ah. I am a priest of Europe. We have different sizes of scapulars, with different things embroidered thereon, and with different cords and such…but it is not our custom to give them different names or labels. The scapular I wear is made for me by the cloistered Nuns.

In any event, if you have an interest in the Servite charism and in their spirituality, focused on Our Lady of Dolors, you should pursue it. Some people have a trepedation about undertaking the Liturgy of the Hours…but the Servite Secular Order is one of few which has not – at least yet – made praying the Liturgy of the Hours normative.

The Servites run the Marianum which is the pontifical faculty of Mariology in Rome. Theirs is a very special Order indeed.

I’m sorry. I’m afraid I’m not understanding you.

Each scapular is worn, physically, in the same way but each scapular is very distinct. The brown scapular is the Carmelite scapular. The blue scapular is the Theatine scapular honouring the Immaculate Conception. The Servite scapular is in honour of the Sorrows of Mary. Each is part of a different devotion.

One can wear more than one – or employ the scapular medal – but they are not interchangeable. They are a miniature version of the habit worn by Religious.

Have you read the treatment by the old Catholic encyclopedia? It is out of date as far as indulgences and various requirements but the history is still quite solid.
