Ok, thanks for clearing that up. Because of the way the documents were highlighted and the way your post was worded, I took it that you were saying that the lay participation wasn’t allowed. I don’t think we have any disagreement that what the lay person is doing is different from what the priest is doing. 🙂

A big concern of mine, as zab noted, was that we not have people thinking there has been something inappropriate done as long as the ritual is properly carried out and people don’t exceed their bounds.

Peace,
That is a big concern of mine as well. Unfortunately, in my neck of the woods, this has been a big problem, especially when annointing with oils is concerned. The bishop finally had to clarify, in his weekly radio address, that the laity aren’t supposed to be engaging in these kind of practices. At least down here, I have not seen anybody assist the priest during the Blessing of the Throats. It’s generally the celebrant, with the help of the deacon (if needed).

Hi John,

Thanks for bringing this up. It is very disheartening for those of us who are called to assist in hospitals and nursing homes to have our volunteer work trashed and our pastors slandered by personal interpretation and preferences.
