Of course it is wise to consult your physician if you have chronic health issues before you fast, but I think it can help with a variety of health problems.
My brother has bi-polar disorder and staying away from coke, coffee and other caffeine loaded drinks helps him a lot. He also stays away from a lot of carbohydrates because of his weight. I swear one slice of bread and that man gains 20 pounds in three days.
One of my cousins suffered from severe migraines until a doctor discovered, through fasting and then adding one food at a time, that it was the red dye in meats and other products that caused them. She started with steamed white rice and spinach. After a week she added chicken breast, no problem. A week later they added carrots, no problem. Long story short, when they added hamburger it almost put her in a coma…literally.
So, I think a well managed fasting practice could benefit a lot of us. Sugar is something for everyone to decrease in their diet. So why not stop eating cakes, candy and pastry if you are one inclined to eat those things. My idea is simply try giving up one or two items at a time that you think might benefit your health and see what happens.
Also, adding something to the diet might be considered fasting, in the sense that you could add a vegetable you find a little icky or not your favorite. Try red cabbage if you have never done so, or a new squash. Testing new stuff out can be real challenging and way to sacrifice your “comfort” a bit.
