My daughter has just started first grade and we are having trouble getting her to all of the catechism classes. My recently widowed mother lives two hours away and we visit every other weekend. The classes are 10:30 AM Sunday and she will miss half of them. Either that, or we won’t be able to visit my mother for the two years of instruction. Can I instruct my daughter on those Sundays we are away using a standard catechism course book?

You would need to discuss the possibility of partially homeschooling your daughter with the director of religious education and the pastor of the parish. Given the circumstances, and presuming that your daughter keeps up with her classmates, your idea for supplementary homeschooling might not be a problem.

But if it is a problem, then I can only recommend finding a way to both meet your responsibilities to your mother and to educate your daughter in her faith. You could, for example, go up to your mother’s on Friday night and come home on Saturday night, rather than spend all of Saturday and Sunday with her. You could also explain the situation to your mother and brainstorm with her to find reasonable alternatives.
