I’m still discerning my vocation and feel that I’m being lead to the religious life. I do however have a history of drug and alcohol use and was wondering if this will prevent me from becoming a monk.

Welcome to the forums!

I am not sure about a drug user becoming a monk but I have recently listened to a CD -" Former Drug Dealer to the Catholic Priesthood" by Father Donald Calloway.

The source for the CD is www.lighthousecatholicmedia.com.

Our faith is all about changed lives! If the drug and alcohol abuse is in your history then I would encourage you to live the rest of your life for His-story!

It could well be the best way of life for you! Monasteries are full of ordinary sinners who are striving to become holy.

Fr. Corapi did …from his bio:

“Father John Corapi is what has commonly been called a late vocation. In other words, he came to the priesthood other than a young man. He was 44 years old when he was ordained. His experiences prior to ordination have been termed simply astounding, but that is probably somewhat of an overstatement. They might be called extreme, however. From small town boy to the Vietnam era US Army, from millionaire businessman in Las Vegas and Hollywood to drug addicted and homeless, to religious life and ordination to the priesthood by Pope John Paul II, to a life as a preacher of the Gospel who has reached millions with the simple message that God’s Name is Mercy!” (retrieved January 6, 2007 from:

He has tapes and videos; speaks through the country; and can be heard on EWTN ewtn.com

Yep, the past is the past. Fathers Corapi and Calloway are indeed excellent examples. And they are wonderful holy priests!

God does not hold us slaves to our pasts! We use those experiences in our service to God and to others once we are totally belonging to Him.

Ave Maria!
