Jews and Christians (as well as others) have always held that God is Omnipotent.
Omnipotent means all powerful - from the Latin, omnis “all” + potens “powerful”. Omnipotence does not mean that God can do the logically impossible. God cannot tempt a person to do evil (James 1:13), nor can he lie (Titus 1:2) etc. To do so would be contrary to His nature and therefore logically impossible.
To ask the question “Can God create a rock so heavy that he himself could not lift it?” is in effect to ask “Is God powerful enough to fail?” This is a nonsensical question, akin to asking “Can God purple toaster gremlin cupboard?”
“Meaningless combinations of words do not suddenly acquire meaning because we prefix to them the two other words “can God”]." (C. S. Lewis, The Problem of Pain, Pg. 18)
Thus, in answering these objections to God’s omnipotence we might invoke the words of St. Thomas Aquinas, who wrote “it is more exact to say that the intrinsically impossible is incapable of production, than to say that God cannot produce it.” (Summa I, Q. xxv, a. 3)
Hope that’s a help,
