An atheist suggested this to me, saying it’s why God makes no sense. Anotherwords God can create an unbreakable shield, but also a sword that can break or pierce through anything. Do you see the contradiction?

What would any of you say?

God cannot contradict His own attributes and character. So no, God cannot do anything. God cannot lie; God cannot die; God cannot do evil; God cannot make a rock too big for him to lift, etc.

It’s an old atheist sophistical attempt to belittle theism. It’s pretty old hat.

Well sir, of course, he could, but then again… wow, as melon-scratchers go that’s a honey-doodle.

Since we are talking about breakable things, we are in the physical realm and time is involved.

Suppose, at time t = (5th July 2008, 12pm)

A person asks God, “Create an unbreakable shield.”

God says, “Fine. Here’s a shield. There’s nothing (material) existing in the world **at this point of time **that can break this shield. It is impossible to break it by any physical means. But since, I’m a spiritual being, I can break it if I want to, with my spiritual power. For there is nothing in this spiritual realm that I cannot “break”. **I am the only one who is “unbreakable”🙂 **”

Person: “That’s perfectly fine with me. I don’t want it to be broken by any physical means **now existing **or which you might create in the future.”

Now, the unbreakable shield is in existence.

Time passes. At time t = (10th July 2008, 12pm)

The person asks God: “God, create a sword that can pierce through anything.”

God: “I cannot do it! 5 days ago, I created a shield that no physical force can break.”

Person: “Hey, **but I thought that you could do anything **because you are God! If you can’t do everything, then you can’t be God.”

God: “I can indeed do everything, as long as I don’t contradict myself. I am the TRUTH. There is nothing that is false in me. If I do something that contradicts myself, I cannot be the TRUTH. I** can never do anything that contradicts myself**, I never do anything that is false.”

by human understanding alone, how can anyone possibly debate what God can and can’t do?
i don’t think we can explain how God can do all things anymore then we can explain how there’s an invisible world,

but you know what, i bet if you asked all these same questions to God himself, you’d understand perfectly…well that or your brain would explode…cause your puny human brain can’t handle such an advanced level of understanding…

God doesn’t DO anything - He is eternal.
God doesn’t think - He knows.
God doesn’t change - He is perfection.
God isn’t anything - He IS.

Be careful of tests that are impossible by definition, such as making a square circle. Some have asked if God could make something so heavy that He can’t lift it. Those questions are impossibilities and are not true tests of the limits of God.

Wow, I want to adopt this saying!

Wow, excellent example I think. Man, I wish I had the wit to think of these things. I’m such a moron, I can never think of intellegent things like the examples you guys make. I guess I shouldn’t even bother getting myself involved into debates.

Don’t call yourself a moron! 🙂

“My son, glorify yourself with humility, and ascribe to yourself honor according to your worth. Who will justify the man that sins against himself? And who will honor the man that dishonors his own life?” (Sirach 10:28-29)

“but God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise, God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong” (1 Cor 1:27)

There are many other things God cannot do.

He cannot go against logic. He cannot create a square circle.

He cannot create another Infinte Being that was never created by Someone else.

These “limitations” on God are not limitations at all, but the logical conclusions of His power.

Nothing is impossible for God. But you’ve mentioned the right word - “contradiction”.

If the he creates a shield that is unbreakable, then he is God. But if the shield is unbreakable even by him, then he is not God. A contradiction. And a contradiction is “not a thing” - or should I say, “nothing”.

So, to put new meaning on an old phrase, “nothing is impossible for God”.
