I am having a friendly discussion with my mother in law…she is a ex Catholic and now Lutheran…she keeps saying that God willed her out of the Church to something different cause the priest at that time was not doing the best of the job she says and that she tried constantly to get help and questions and the priest never helped so she left…From my understanding Christ is the bridegroom to the Church like st paul says and its a mystery…so how logically could God will someone out of his own Church??? Is it possible??? Thoughts pleas

Hi,

That’s an odd thing to say. For one thing, if the Catholic Church is the true Church, God wouldn’t “will” someone out of that true Church. Your MIL has free will herself. She could have stuck around and found the answer to whatever she was looking for. Sounds like she’s trying to make excuses for why she left the Church, and dragging God into it to make it appear “legitimate”. Whatever she was trying to get help with, could have been done with another priest I’m sure. Lots of people here always advise to go talk to another priest if the one they’re talking to isn’t helping.

thats what I was thinking as well! Since the CAtholic Church is the Church established by Christ than how could Christ will someone out of it…its like a double negative…but I think thats whats happening is her discerning of his will is clouted.

Agreed. There’s such a thing as a “test of faith,” but leaving the Church would mean you failed the test.

Sometimes we confuse God’s will with our own. If we don’t meditate and pray enough, we sometimes fail to see the distinction. A lot of people claim that God commanded them to do something. Its a matter of being in the right state of mind and allowing God’s will to take you to where He wants you to be. My favorite analogy is God’s will is a mighty river, and we are boats on that river. We can either paddle in the direction we want to go, or just let God take over and take us where He wants to take us. But we have to lift the oars to do so.

She is passing the buck and attempting to avoid the consequences of “her choice”. Many people leave the church, and many people say “the priest made me do it, or the Pope made me do it, or the altar servers made me do it, or the “english Mass” made me do it, or music made me do it, or the way the Catholics live made me do it…”.
However, generally it is an inabilility to live within the teachings of the Catholic Church and shape your life to be the image of GOD.

This is a lame excuse for not wanting to take responsibility for HER decision to turn her back on the Fullness of Truth in the Catholic Church. So she blames it on a priest - and makes him responsible for HER decision to leave.

God wants us all to be with Him (it is why He created us in the first place!!) - it would make no sense whatsoever for Him to push someone away. That is just ridiculous. If she left the Church it was her own doing, not anyone else’s.

Bottom line is your mother-in-law didn’t know her faith or have faith in Christ’s Church. She didn’t really believe in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, because if she did, she’d have never left. She left for worldly reasons, I assure you. Pray for her.

God allowed her to make her own decisions, and one of her own decisions was leaving the Church. That’s not God “willing someone out of the Church”, that’s God allowing someone to have free-will, no matter how bad the decision may be.

Yes

“First of all, then, I ask that supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone, for kings and for all in authority, that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in all devotion and dignity. This is good and pleasing to God our savior, who wills everyone to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth. For there is one God. There is also one mediator between God and the human race, Christ Jesus, himself human, who gave himself as ransom for all”. (1 Tim 2:4)

I love this quote from a post up above “That’s not God “willing someone out of the Church”, that’s God allowing someone to have free-will, no matter how bad the decision may be”
That is SO true…I will pray for her and treat her with love and try to explain the faith with gentleness in moments when I can. Even though she chose to leave the Church the Lord has a divine plan to make all things new…I hope I can be an instrument to his plan and help her return to the fullness of the faith with love.

I will!

God can use non-Catholics to help others live their Faith. Non-Catholics can be good examples of how to live virtuous lives, and they often have groups that provide support in that. A person who is strong in their knowledge of the Catholic faith and in their desire to practice it may find going to such groups helpful if they can’t find support in Catholic circles (shame on the Catholics for not supporting those who need them), but I believe Catholics should concentrate their efforts when it comes to Church-related things on building up the Catholic Church.

If there is a force trying to “will” someone out of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church, my first instinct is that said force is coming more from “below” than “above,” if you get what I’m saying…

No, God does not tell some one to
leave a church. If a person if having problems getting an answer, and feels that,he getting
any were, than that person, should go into the church, when the doors open ,and talk with
God in his house, the church, and let God give him the answer. But remember,God decides
when to answer, the request . But we never give up ,for the Devil is trying to take us away from the true church. Remember what Jesus said,“That those who come to receive me,
shall have etrural happen in Heavean” May God help you see the true lihgt.😉
