My oldest son (10yrs) has Autism. He goes to church with us always and is very attentive to what happens at the altar. He is distractable though and needs to be guided for doing tasks. He has received his First Holy Communion. I would love to see him deepen his faith and grow close to the Eucharist. I was thinking to ask my priest to allow him to help serve at the altar. Is that possible? Can he serve with an altar server buddy who can Guide him?

Hi,

I don’t think it would be wise to risk the child’s possible embarrassment at a public Mass. But certainly I could see him serving at a home Mass or some other Mass where someone could guide him and the public would not be present. Check with your pastor.
