Can I, A Lay Person, Use One Sacramental, Holy Water To Be Precise, To 'Bless' Another Sacramental?

I recently received a small Crucifix that belonged to my grandfather when he was alive. He died well over 24 years ago.

It was decided after it has been recovered by my family that it be given to me seeing as I’m his “very Catholic” Granddaughter.

Now, I don’t like to keep Sacramental that are not Blessed with me and nobody is sure that’s the case with this very Sacramental - I have a Number of Blessed Sacramentals of which one of them is Holy Water;

Now I was wondering, can I use that to Bless this little Crux by myself, seeing that I won’t be meeting a Priest anytime soon?

If yes, what Prayers or Rites can I use?

As I understand things, blessing of sacramentals can only be done by a bishop, priest or deacon. Most priests (and deacons) are more than happy to bless religious articles after Mass. You could ask on Sunday 🙂

You could bless it if by blessing you mean asking God’s favor for those who piously use the crucifix. Lay people can do some blessings like bless food or bless their children. But this is a different type of blessing than what a priest offers. His blessing has the authority of the Church. So you need to have a priest bless it if you want the blessing that comes from the Church.

For the blessing of a new home, from the Book of Blessings:
“661 The present order may be used by a priest or deacon. It may also be used by a layperson …”.
“675 After the prayer of blessing, the minister sprinkles those present and the new home with holy water …”.

But Chapter 44 of the USA Book of Blessings has “Order for the Blessing of Religious Articles”:
“1442 The present order is to be used to bless medals, small crucifixes …”.
“1444 The present order may be used by a priest or deacon.”

In fact, while holy water is ideal, it is not necessary. What makes the sacramental blessed is the prayer of the priest, not the holy water.

thank you all, for the responses; i spoke with a Priest over the phone and he said, in this instance, where im not gonna have access to a priest anytime soon, i could sprinkle the Holy Water in the Crux with no need of a Particular Rite or Prayer but in Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti…

No.

If you want it blessed, you have to have a priest (or deacon) bless it.

Yes, you could sprinkle it with holy water.

If you want it blessed, you must have it blessed.

No, sorry.

You can use it, but it won’t be blessed.
