Cardinal Sarah made a statement recently regarding the accessibility of Communion and it’s distribution during this pandemic(
Nobody can prevent a priest from confessing and giving communion, nobody has the right to stop him. The sacrament must be respected. So even if it is not possible to attend Masses, the faithful can ask to be confessed and to receive Communion. +RS pic.twitter.com/ZvwjSoTpuo

I was wondering if I can ask my pastor to hear my confession and give me communion if I request it? My parish has been locked and closed down even the office for the past few weeks. Can he still deny me the sacraments despite Cardinal Sarah’s statement?
If I am able to receive communion how would it be done and how does it go down in these personal communions? Anything that I bring along or say? Is it just him saying “The Body of Christ” and me receiving it and being on my way?

It’s up to the pastor. I asked mine about the possibility of being anointed (for example) and he said not unless I was on my death bed. He was more than happy to hear my confession (from a distance) and share the Eucharist with me.

Great. Did you receive Holy Communion? How did the priest administer ?

Yes. Confession first (6 feet apart in the parking lot), then he went inside and prepared the Eucharist. He brought the Precious Body out in a ciborium with a plastic covering over the top. He placed the Host in my hand and that was that.

I don’t see why your priest is bound by what Cardinal Sarah says. So, sure, you can ask, but your priest might say no.

Yes you can ask him.

Yes. Cardinal Sarah’s statement isn’t about the laity having a right to receive the sacraments, but rather about the priest’s right to distribute it.

It’s up to your pastor.

You can ask absolutely anything. But you may or may not be accommodated.

Yeah, I was a little confused about this too. No disrespect to Cardinal Sarah, but…

Our Archbishop has definitely encouraged confessions (done safely and at a distance) but has discouraged distributing communion outside the context of Holy Mass… except for the dying etc.

Happy you and maybe others in the church have been able to be have communion. Im starving for our Lord in the blessed sacrament. The source of all my needs.
My husband reached out to a priest friend today and Father said our bishop says no for now.

This is up to each Bishop.

Our Diocese has encouraged priests to hear confessions, to make the Churches open for prayer, confession and anointing.

Our Bishop has suspended the Eucharist to the lay people until the 17th (except in a life or death situation).

Why would one want to ask their priest to be disobedient to their Bishop?
. Can he still deny me the sacraments despite Cardinal Sarah’s statement?
If Cardinal Sarah is your Bishop, then, he has authority over the priests in your Diocese.

My diocese lost our bishop several months ago, so that’s probably why my pastor is doing it. It’s a free for all here.
