I know this comes up a lot, but there’s a bit of nuance to this case that I’d like some advice on.
This past Christmas, my sister announced her engagement to her boyfriend (also Catholic). Later, I came to discover that they planned on getting married outside of the Church for reasons they’ve failed to fully clarify.
They asked me to be a groomsmen and I explained my reservations. After much discussion, my sister has come to the conclusion that she does, in fact, want her marriage to be blessed by the Church, but that she wants it to occur in a private ceremony, apart from her secular marriage.
I’m left wondering what I should do about attending and participating in her secular wedding. I don’t want to alienate my sister, but I don’t want to cause scandal either.
