I have a cousin who was baptized Catholic and probably received First Communion, but otherwise was not raised as an active Catholic. She is marrying a Catholic man (also non-practicing, fallen-away, not sure if his family was ever active in the faith or not). Neither really claims to be Catholic for quite some time. They are having a non-Catholic wedding ceremony at the same place as the reception (not a church).
Is this marriage viewed as “valid”? As a Catholic myself, can I attend the wedding in good conscience? If not, how do I respond to the invitation?
Thanks for any advice!
