I am writing this from the heart. I have been desiring to be a priest for several years, I have grown to have a great desire to Serve Christ’s people. I am a devout Catholic, and I uphold the teachings of the church in my own life and when I talk to others about my Faith.

The problem is I have been struggling with same sex attractions for years. I have read countless books on how to heal and overcome. I have worked very hard to try to heal myself and I have to some degree.

I know that recently the issue of men with same sex attractions in the priesthood has become a debate recently. I have spoken to some people, some say that I would only be excluded if I related to the homosexual lifestyle (which I dont) others say that even the slightest feeling automatically excludes me.

I have wondered if God isn’t really calling me, and I have tried to persue other things, but a selfless desire to be a priest isn’t going away, In fact it’s becoming stronger. Its been at the point where I can’t picture doing anything else with my life than celebrating the Eucharist, hearing confessions etc. I know that the desire cannot be mine, it has to come from God, but like I said it is a comletely selfless desire, and I am wondering why God would allow such a strong desire in the heart of someone who isn’t qualified.

to say the least I am confused, This is my entire life I am questioning and I want to make sure I do what God wants me to do.

I just want to add that I have no attraction towards children, I have no inclinations towards pedophelia, and I would never break a promise of chastity, I have already learned that purity for Christ is much more important than lust.

any (name removed by moderator)ut would be appreciated,

Thanks,
Mike, CA

Every single one of us has problems in which we must over come in this life. Wether it is same sex problems or even dealing with lustful attraction/desires or even violent/temper issues. the most important thing is you have tried and are still trying with the help of God to over come the issue that you have.

Put your faith in God and give it 110%. Its great because you know what you want and had wanted for years now. So nothing is stopping you. nobody is perfect not even prest. Just remember never lie to get to where you want to. GOOD LUCK

There isn’t a simple black-and-white answer to this, but suffice it to say that gay men have been and still are accepted to the priesthood dependent on their ability to live a chaste lifestyle (the same standard set for heterosexual men). There is a range of views from amongst the faithful and the clergy as to whether that is appropriate or not, but nevertheless it remains the case. You might want to have a look at this thread to see that range of views being expressed:

The church’s offical position is summarised in a document which can be found at the Vatican website:

vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/ccatheduc/documents/rc_con_ccatheduc_doc_20051104_istruzione_en.html

The document grants discretion regarding admissions to the responsible ordinary i.e. bishop or religious superior, subject to the candidate’s suitability. You might wish to look for some spiritual direction for more advice and to help you in your process of discerning God’s plans for you. Best wishes in that endeavour, and remember that God doesn’t abandon us even when our wishes or calling are complicated or seem to be blocked. Searching for and finding God’s will for us can only bring us happiness.

Hey catholicguy,

Thank you for your openness and honesty. It sounds like you are really in a great position for discerning God’s will for your life. As was already mentioned, I highly recommend finding someone competent who you can speak with on a personal level.

Also, I am aware of several instances where young men were able to get the kind of help that basically eliminated or greatly reduced their homosexual tendencies. If you are interested in more information, PM me. Our Creator has made it possible for certain changes to take place, which may seem miraculous…

Perhaps right now, rather than worrying about things outside your control, you can focus on your relationship with God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, as well as Mary our Mother. I mean, how much do they mean to you? What are you willing to do for them? How can you serve them where you are right now?
