Hi everyone,

I am 26 years old. I have been Catholic since before I was 1 year old. I received holy communion and first reconciliation when I was very young. I left the Church for years, and I recently came back. I received the sacrament of reconciliation and now I am in good standing with the Church. However, I did not receive confirmation when I was a child. How do I receive it now?

Hello. 🙂 Welcome back to the Church!

You need to speak with your priest about this. By Church law, every Latin Catholic must go through a period of instruction before receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation (unless you are in danger of death). If you go to a small parish, you might mix in with the RCIA class for instruction. Or, you might meet with your priest for private instruction sessions.

Welcome back to the One, Truth Faith! 👍

WONDERFUL! Welcome home.

Enjoy preparing for Confirmation. It’s fun, and interesting learning about the Church, and God as an adult (RCIA). Please don’t be impatient with the process. Some RCIA classes can take a year, before you are confirmed. After all, learning about God is a life long process. We are constantly changing as we question, learn, and apply the faith to our lives. Let us journey together. 🙂

Welcome home! You definitely can be confirmed. There are a few ways to approach this, and each parish will have slightly different arrangements.

You can go through RCIA, but personally, just based on my own experience, I do not recommend this. I initially joined an RCIA class as a returning Catholic, but RCIA is intended for those joining the Church for the first time. Your needs as a re-vert actually can be different. This experience pushed me back out of the Catholic church for 7 more years!

Another approach is an adult Confirmation class. This is ultimately the path I took and it was incredibly rewarding. I found a nearby parish that runs adult Confirmation classes separately from RCIA. It was such an amazing spiritual growth experience and the group that went through Confirmation together became good friends and still keeps in touch.

I’m now a teen Confirmation catechist at my parish so I’ve finally seen all three ways of pursuing this awesome sacrament. Best wishes to you!

When I entered the church a few years ago, about half my RCIA class were Catholics that had never been confirmed and the other half were being newly received into the church.

Different priests do it different ways. You might be asked to join the RCIA, or there might be private classes that you can attend.

Either way, there is a process for you, and it is certainly possible. Welcome home! 🙂
