Can I be forgiven of mortal sin if I'm not allowed to be Catholic because of my parents?

Hi, as of right now I am a 17 year old female who is still living with my Protestant parents while I finish high school. I was introduced to the Catholic faith around 1 1/2 years ago and fell in love with it. I have been raised in a Pentecostal home all of my life and was baptized at the age of 15. I have already discussed conversion with my parents and they weren’t happy at all. They don’t approve of me going to Mass under their reign, so I have to wait until I move out and graduate in order to start my RCIA. My main question is this: What if I die before I am able to convert? I understand mortal and venial sin, and the Sacrament of Reconciliation, yet I am unable to partake in it. I obviously have committed many sins and will continue to, both mortal and venial. What I understand is that venial sins can be forgiven through prayer and other methods, but Mortal sins can only be forgiven by perfect contrition or through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. I am worried I won’t be able to obtain perfect contrition and since I’m unable to partake in the sacrament, will I be forgiven those sins if I die prematurely? I pray this won’t happen to me but it’s been eating at me for the past year. I have another 1 1/2 years until I can move out and a lot can happen in that time.

It’s called Baptism of desire.
But you’re not going to die before you are old enough to convert. Be at peace,
Pray, respect and honor your parents make them proud.
In the meantime, read good solid, Catholic materials.

God bless you.

I love this type of thread I don’t know why. You are not the first person who has brought up this topic. I wanted to be a Catholic to at a young age but my father was an Episcopalian priest can you imagine the talk? what would people say including the Vestry? especially the Vestry

Then when I was at age I got involved in New Age stuff what a waste of time that was. I digress. I have to Echo everything that pianist Claire said. you will be fine just fine and we will be waiting for you! God is already with you.

You believe in the Holy Spirit and his power so you can be assured that if you truly want to receive the sacraments The Spirit will guide you.
Trust in the Holy Spirit to guide you to the sacraments
If it helps you can speak with a Catholic priest don’t worry it will all work out God bless you

The Sacraments help solidify our confidence in salvation, not decrease it. Without the sacraments, we are left guessing whether we are sorry enough for our past sins, or whether we love God enough. Some people feel confident about it, others don’t, but either way our emotions aren’t what determine truth, and aside from this, one can never be too sorry nor love God too much.

But the Sacraments are visible and you receive them from a live person who is acting in the person of Christ.

So trust in God and don’t forget the obvious: God is on our side. He doesn’t want us to be lost. He wants our salvation more than we do. Ask Jesus for the grace of perfect contrition and that you be protected at the hour of your death, and have confidence that he will hear your prayer. It is the Enemy who gives doubt about God’s thirst for our salvation and happiness. Don’t listen. In good time, you’ll be home in the Church. Your first Easter Vigil as a Catholic is something you will never forget. 🙂

Hi. Don’t worry. There are many practical physical obstacles that prevent you from getting being a Catholic like what you have said. God sees your heart. And yes, there’s such thing as Baptism of desire.

Catholics also believe what happened to the good thief at the cross, though it hardly applies to you since you are not going to die anytime soon. The point is, God honor your desire and in His mercy and compassion will forgive you since you are still on a journey to go home.

Just keep the faith and when it’s time, get formally into the Church.

God bless you.

I’ve been following this Priest lately. I hope this may be of help to you. Recorded homily at Mass.

What a tough position to be in! Could you possibly see the Catholic priest after school?
Maybe you could share with him your concerns and how you have committed one or more
mortal sins that you understand confession is for Catholic that you have the desire to be
Catholic but that being under the care of your parents they will not permit you.

I’m sure the priest will assure you of God’s mercy and may even give you absolution!

If you can’t go in person could you call him on the phone while at school? Just some thoughts!

I’d recommend getting (or making one yourself if getting one is impractical) one of those “if I’m dying call a priest” cards and carry it with you. That way, if you end up in an accident or something there’ll be a chance that a priest will be called.

Also, non-Catholics are allowed to receive the sacrament of confession under certain circumstances. Speak to a local priest about this. If that’s the case, then you could go to confession if you ever have the chance to do so.

Wow! Your story really makes me glad someone else is in the same situation I am. I’m sure many people have gone (and are going) through the same situation, it’s just easier putting a name to them. 😄 I will pray for the gift of hope and perseverance through this journey. I will also be praying for you. I’m 17 as well and have 10 more months until I’m 18.

i would really caution everyone to be cautious here and not urge the OP to break the 6th commandment…

Thank you so much,Thomas, for that video. I never knew how simple it actually is to gain such a grace from God. He is very merciful and sometimes I get scared He will withhold His love from me but I constantly have to remind myself that His suffering was for my sake as well. I have faith that He will redeem me and restore my soul.

Don’t worry Ray, I won’t do anything extreme against them or do anything with the intent to bring them harm or agony. I pray for their understanding everyday day and that they will be able to accept this transition of mine. I pray my Rosary in secret and sometimes they will bring up a misconception, but I explain the truth in the most gentle manner I can. Thank you for your concern though ☺️

Sins of grave matter can be forgiven by an act of perfect contrition without Confession. You merely have to have the intention to go to Confession as soon as you can. Obviously you cannot do that at the moment. Our relationship with God is a human one not a legalistic courtroom presided over by a hanging judge.

Yes BlackFriar, I plan to go to Confession as soon as I can. Thank you for reminding me that God may be our judge, but He is also our defender. He is just and is willing to be merciful on my situation. My soul longs for the day when I can finally be completely reconciled with Him.

Haha thanks for clearing up that up! Also to clear something else up I realized is not mentioned: I am a girl 😂
