Can I be my Lutheran neice's Godparent?

I’m guessing not. I’m asking advice because I already am and want to fix it.

I’m Catholic, my neice is Lutheran and I witnessed her baptism as one of two official sponsors. I know that this was wrong, but was not clear-headed enough to tell my sister “no” when she asked me, or to consult a priest first. Now I want to know how to get out of this situation with as much charity and tact as possible.

Two questions:

1. Can I be an official baptismal WITNESS instead of SPONSOR/Godparent for her Lutheran baptism, as I have heard a protestant can be for a Catholic batpism?
2. How should I go about telling my sister that I messed up and that things need to be changed regarding my “sponsorship” of her daughter’s baptism? In other words, how should I “apologize” in both senses of the word: a) say I’m sorry and b) witness attractively to the Catholic truth on this matter?
