Hello.
So I have a part time job paying $11/hr and I work about 25hr/week. I get paid in cash and it’s not taxed. Is this a sin?
I contacted my boss and she said she could put me on the books and said it would be easiest if I get taxed for 10hr/week and get paid in cash for the rest. Is this a good solution or should I request my whole paycheck to be taxed. Please help. This is giving a lot of anxiety.

I am assuming you are in the US It is a sin to not file a tax return and report the income. If you owe income taxes, it will be a sin not to pay

Also, you and your employer are not paying payroll taxes, that is a sin.

Breaking a just law(and labor laws in the US are just laws) is sinful.

It is also a BAD idea. You do not want to work for someone who is willing to break the law.

By paying you for fewer hours, less will go toward your social security and disability contributions, it will be difficult or impossible for you to collect unemployment insurance if you get laid off, will prevent you from being covered by Workmen’s Comp if you are injured at work.

I’m just a kid. This is one of my first jobs. I still live with my parents and all. Being paid 10hr/week on the books and being paid in cash isn’t a good solution, I guess? I’m just worried about being a pain and asking her to put all on the books because it’s more work for her.

Start now working for honest people in an honest way.

Unscrupulous people exploit kids sometimes by dodging the law when paying them.

But is this a sin on my part? I really don’t care about “what is I get laid off?” And “what if I get injured at work?”

Get used to it, taxes are no fun, but we have to pay the. As does she.

Well, if you get injured at work, you will care. Your parents will care.

Just be above board and be employed legally.

You might want to run for office someday 🙂

We cannot give you legal advice, but, ask your mom and dad to talk to their tax person and find out what to do.

It’s not a sin. It’s not your fault. Talk to your parents and they will be able to give you better advice on the credibility of this employer. Accept the paycheck, be proud of yourself for earning money 😊

This sort of thing is really common in the restaurant and landscaping industry. Sure, it’s good spending money but you can’t make a living working “under the table”.

My parents weren’t brought up as religious as I was. They do not know much about morals and do not know much about what is a sin.

Also, a ton of people from my church work for the same person and get paid in cash. Is this a black and white matter or a grey area?

If you’re scrupulous, you need to stop seeking advice here. It will only make your condition worse. You should seek the guidance of your priest.

Just keep track of it and report your income/pay taxes. You’d pay self employment taxes and need to pay quarterly.

Please have a heart to heart with your parents about this. It will be okay.

❤️

If others from your parish work for the same person and are also paid in cash, then maybe that’s the norm for your employer. So don’t worry about the way you are paid. Just need track of your earnings and put them in the bank.

It might be “the norm” but that doesn’t make it legal. Granted, is the IRS really going to audit a 15 year old with a summer job? Probably not.

Claim the cash income when you do your taxes for the year- that’s the way to address the cash you’ve made to date and be at peace.
I can’t imagine that a part-time student job will result in a lot of tax owing. I don’t know about the US, but in Canada you don’t pay taxes period on the first x thousand…
